Spec me a gaming/virtualisation PC

My PC (P4 3.2GHz, 2Gb DDR1 - over 5 years old!) has finally started to kick the bucket so, I think I'm gonna need a new one and pretty soon! It's been long enough now (well over 5 years!) so I'm looking for a decent enough rig that can handle the latest graphic hungry games, but I will also be doing a lot of work and virtualisation (VMware Workstation) on there too. Mainly mini network/server/domain work and testing. I haven't kept up with what's the latest, the last PC I built was a 1366 for my brother on a Rampage II Extreme. But now, there is so much! 1366, 1155, 1156? X58, P55, H67, SandyBridge? It's all new to me!

I've already got a Corsair 620w PSU, so I can salvage that from my old PC and I am inclined towards getting the Antec P183 case as it's nice looking case and reasonably silent seeing as it will be sitting in my living room (also acting as a Media Centre!) I have a WinTV HVR-1300 which I will salvage from the old PC too. I like the Asus Motherboards so I would like to stick with one of them, but will look at others if they are much better!

I've weighed up the pros and cons of an SSD drive and for the time being I feel I'd be much better off with the space and lesser speed/cost of a SATA drive over the faster performace and lesser space/cost of an SSD.

I've never had a powerful enough PC to do it before, but I would like to look in to playing with overclocking with this PC.

Budget wise, I'd ideally like to remain at the lower side of £800, but I can push towards an absolute maximum of £1000. Seeing as I won't probably be upgrading again for another 5-6 years (unless my salary dramatically improves!) I'm happy to spend right up to the £1000 if it gets me something a little bit special, at least for a few weeks! :p

Things I don't need:
Monitor (Got a new Samsung SM2333HD)
Keyboard
Mouse
Speakers (Happy with speakers in the Samsung)
I have 2 DVD-RW drives, both are IDE. However, if needs be, I will replace this with a single SATA DVD-RW. Don't really need 2.
Windows 7 (Have a freebie from Microsoft that I have yet to use!)

Sorry for sounding too picky, but it's taken me years to rack up the budget, so I wanna get the best and what I want out of the tight budget and long term investment! :p

Could someone please very kindly spec me something nice?

Any help is very much appreciated! :)

Thanks for the prompt reply! Looks like a decent system. The only couple of things I probably will change is, for the amount I am spending, I don't want to look any less than an i7 (Also, because it has to last me a good few years, I guess it's best to go for the better/faster CPU beforehand).

However, I will need 1Tb at the very minimum for the HDD as VMs and games take up space way too fast, 500Mb would be eaten in a jiffy!

After much research and deliberation, this is what I have settled on. Please rate/critique!

I would really just stick with stulids first spec, i5 is more than enough for most of what you do and you could just increase the HDD to 1gb and have a great system. No need for a H70 or delux motherbroad and could be spent else where :).
