Hey guys,

currently I have a 2209wa which I mostly use for XBOX 360. It black boarders the top and bottom so I basically end up with a 16:9 21.5"ish screen while gaming on the xbox.

Is it worth grabbing a U2311H or is that dumb? I think I may just be "upgrading" for the sake of it.

Just to also add my 2209wa is perfect. When I got it I went through 3-4 with Dell and this one has perfect backlight, no dead or stuck pixels and no buzzing when reducing the brightness.

So talk me down or talk me up :D

Tough one... I looked at both when I upgraded. The thing the clinched it for me was 1080p (I also use it for blu-ray). According to this, input lag is slightly lower on the 2209wa. Can't say I've noticed any problems with lag at all, and jumping from 1690x1050 to 1920x1080 definitely improves the visuals.

I know that the U2311H is a great monitor, I use it for everything (gaming, work, etc) and I can say it is really good so far.

The only annoying thing is the fact that it dosen't have HDMI, but that can be easily countered.

Given the 16.3ms (in)accuracy of such readings I wouldn't look too much into those figures.

Having had considerable experience with the U2311H and some with the 2209WA I wouldn't place too much between them. I would be tempted to say that for whatever reason the luminance uniformity is generally poorer on the U2311H and you may be playing swapsies once again. The backlight arrangement is a little different as the U2311H has 4 CCFL bulbs behind the edges whereas the 2209WA has 6 behind the panel in a direct-lighting arrangement. This can contribute to generally superior luminance uniformity and colour consistancy. The contrast readings from the centre and overall black depth if recorded in this way is relatively poor on the 2209WA in comparison to the U2311H but it isn't really something I consider strong on either monitor and such a measurement is a little limiting in this case. I found the colour gradients to be smoother on the 2209WA and the apparent colour range (particularly at the low end and greens more generally) to be a bit stronger, too. Really for gaming, though, the U2311H may be a nice upgrade for the resolution alone and performance is above and beyond most others in its price range.

Would the 2209WA be better for image editing?? I prefer the 16:10 ratio too and it seems all the cheaper IPS and VA monitors are 16:9 ratio.

Are there any good 16:10 alternatives to the 2209WA upto £400??

I current use a Phillips 200W6CS(calibrated with an Optix XR).

Dell 2209WA uses a true 8-bit panel so it should produce better colours when calibrated, in theory at least.

It is also able to run at 76Hz which helps a lot in gaming.

Thanks for that!

Do you know of any other decent 16:10 screens under £400??

A refurbished Dell U2410 perhaps? Can be had for £350.

HP ZR24W sells for £300 new. That should be an even better choice.

Depending on your usage, you might be also interested in Hazro HZ27WC that is here at OcUK for pre-order, priced at £375.

It is a 16:9 screen but still has 60% larger workspace than a 1920x1200 monitor.

I think there is an issue with the ZR24w in terms of gaming as the overdrive impulse doesn't seem to be well implemented and tftcentral recommends disabling it. Hence it isn't really ideal for gaming uses (though still a nice monitor for non-gaming like image editing).

The Hazro you mention sounds really interesting (especially this time around with the non-glass option). £375 looks like it will buy you a lot of monitor (27in, H-IPS panel, 2560x1440 res, low input lag and well-implemented overdrive) and without the glass hopefully it won't be plagued with the trapped dust issues of the glass version. It may not be 16:10 - but it is cheaper than a new U2410 and due to the larger size it is still slightly taller and much higher resolution. Personally, I would wait a week or two after release to see how the early adopters find it - but imho it is well worth keeping an eye on.
