• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

I think digitimes are making assumptions here and going off the top of their head. They said 10nm risk end of 2016, it's volume, not risk. So perhaps AMD are not ordering any wafers after all.

Which is strange as without that tidbit the story is not new.

What are they going to do when they cannot make them any smaller and cannot go over the 300w TDP limit?

They will use a material that can switch faster than silicon. So it'll be back to the GHz wars.

There's one being mooted atm that produces no waste heat. It's called stanene.

After 7nm (~2020) they will probably use a material already in use for communications equipment (germanium or gallium-arsenide) and graphene wiring.

There's also an optical computer made by a company called Optalysys. Lots of variables, not clear yet what will happen.
