If you haven't spotted the case yet it's a HAF XB EVO. CPU is a delidded i5-3570K under the Noctua cooler.
Both CPU & GPU run in the 40s unless I'm pushing the 980 Ti close to 1500MHz where it climbs to 52 DegC.



For scale that's an 27" Asus VG278 144Hz TN panel sitting above my Korean UHD panel :)

Thanks both for this.

The RMA process is a big one to consider, but then again I cant justify the extra £100 almost to go for EVGA hybrid and I would hope that the two cases above are just a small minority.

So if we are working on a budget of £570, what would be the best air cooled 980ti to get? In terms of performance and temperatures.

And what sort of temperatures are expected from the reference cards at full chat?

You're going SLI right?

Get the reference card, just the cheapest you can find with a decent warranty, they are the better option compared to any other cooler (for SLI).
If you have spare money in the future you can buy the EVGA AIO cooler, which for 90£ transforms your reference into an EVGA Hybrid.

Any other card in sli will be a mess compared to reference (because kicks the hot air out of the case) or water.

For example the G1 I have now is pretty thin and runs cool, but having two of them would mean higher temps for the top card, which could lead to throttling, without even considering the noise and the poor cpu which would have to deal with all the heat.
I always say that non reference SLI is a mistake you only do once :p

When I had G1's SLi'd then the top card didn't throttle but it got BLOODY hot!! I have/had decent case airflow though.

SLi can be very hot with such a monstrous card tbh

I was all set for the inno3d until I read about where they are based and even though I have never been worried about RMA processes before, it has made me wonder.

I also checked and the larger proportion of cards bought were reference based on the ROH which is a good sign and a reference was my original idea anyway.

Hmm, decision is getting a bit easier for sure.

So I had a play with AfterBurner last night. Ive hit 1482 on the core with stok volts. The temp gets to about 70. Strange thing is though the TDP does not go over 85% even if its set to 109% in afterburner? Anybody know what is causing this?

I believe the reason for that is the TDP% shown in Afterburner monitor is considering your 109% power limit to be 100% of the power available to the GPU, if that makes sense? Saying that I have had it hit 105% on my G1 Gaming before (130% power limit rather than 109%), so I'm not sure.

The way I see it is that if it's not losing performance I don't care if it doesn't use all the power it can.

I was running Furmark at 1080p 8x AA (window) 100% usage 85%TDP Shown in afterburner and GPU-Z. 69% ASIC score. Ill have another look but im sure this is also the case if set to 100% power ie. default.

Don't use Furmark as all it does is damage your cards.

Modern GPUs can detect Furmark and will not run flatout.

Both CPU & GPU run in the 40s unless I'm pushing the 980 Ti close to 1500MHz where it climbs to 52 DegC.



For scale that's an 27" Asus VG278 144Hz TN panel sitting above my Korean UHD panel :)




I'll have to look back through the 980 Ti thread and see if I've missed any tricks!

I think +87mV makes it 1.243v if I recall - But honestly, I don't think boosting my card up to 15XX MHz is going to make a huge difference over the 1410MHz it boosts to out of the box, at least not enough to warrant the headaches from unstable games, so I left it as it is.

You'll probably find that without voltage it'll do about 1480/8000 without any problems
