Often wondered about this whats the best option to use for Desktop Colour via Nvidia Control Panel>Adjust Desktop Colour Settings -

1:Other applications control colour settings.

2:Use Nvidia settings.

Higher Asic means less volts needed for any given clock and it was a tangible factor across the 5 different models of 980Ti I had.

From the lowest with 63% which couldn't go past 1420 to the best (75%) which could easily handle 1500.
The MSI I have now is at 70% and can't go above 1470 at stock volts.

So of course in the grand scheme it doesn't matter, but given how poorly the card scales with voltage I wouldn't mind paying a premium for the higher Asic.
I mean if Kapp does 1565 on stock volts vs my 70% at 1470, that's not bad at all.
Under water, that's when Asic doesn't matter.

What you need to understand, is that there are people reading your posts that may take your advice as good, which it is not. You are encouraging people to potentially invalidate the warranty on their card by fitting water cooling. Now, that in itself is not entirely a big issue... we are all capable of making informed decisions about what to do with our hardware.
What you need to understand is that not everyone who buys a GTX 980 Ti assumes/expects to change their case because it does not have bottom case fans. It does not mention anywhere whatsoever that buyers need a certain airflow threshold or the GPU throttles or burns out.

What I find to be an issue, is your constant refusal to acknowledge that the resolution has no impact on the operating temperature of the card. This is despite this fact being repeatedly pointed out to you by various people. You also refuse to acknowledge that good air flow will not only reduce the heat in the case and by result the GPU, but it will maintain the warranty of the card and also be compatible with any future card (a water block will not). Resolution has a huge impact on GPU temps look at any of the reviews done see how much warmer the GPU is @ 4K if you can find them as most reviews concentrate on 1080 gaming only temps as that's the target for a single GPU.4K gaming in the real world in some games creates massive amounts of heat. I am not talking about 10-15 mins here or there for reviews/benchmarks but hours on end @ 4K can be a massive strain on a PC @4K@60FPS maxxed out

I am not refusing to acknowledge airflow at all. I am refusing to acknowledge the HSF included with some GTX 980 Ti's is good enough for 4K gaming @ 60FPS with max details UNLESS you have a specific case type blowing cold air into the GPU HSF. I CBA to link to all the instances I found where many PC gamers on other forums in July/Aug talked about the same thing & most concluded unless you had a recent case with bottom case fans & or several additional case fans a single GPU is not up to 4K thermally for long periods of time. GPU Boost 2.0 does not help much either it hits the thermal limit sooner & is just Nvidia's sneaky way to ensure their cards boost FPS above AMD (even though they effectively already beat AMD commercially Nvidia are determined to put them out of business).

You had a bad experience with a poor PC case. Just because you water cooled your card to resolve problems it presented, it does not follow that this is the only solution open to anyone else who may encounter issues with heat, or indeed be considering buying a 980Ti and being subsequently put off by your ramblings (particularly people who wish to use the card with a 4K monitor).
Funny you mention that its like your trying to demand that because you have a certain case everyone else must have the same case & or a similar airflow. Your case is so good in fact your talking about putting your MSI under water now

You are giving out the impression that a 980Ti must be water cooled by providing flawed anecdotal "evidence". This is simply not the case as most people have installed their cards into their system, on air, with no issues at all.
Your giving the impression that everyone who owns a 980Ti must have a recent case with bottom case fans as a minimum. Most people who buy this card will assume its good for the intended useage without having to invest in a new case. Nvidia do not talk anywhere about the need for a specific airflow level do they? So most buyers will assume the supplied HSF is good enough for all case types & the manufacturer has done their R&D homework! I guess the big clue here is that there are now more Hybrid GPU's than ever because without talking about it incase it affects sales they prefer to sell the air HSF cards as is & hope the RMA numbers are low enough to not be a major issue. but Nvidia are also being sneaky as remove the GPU Boost 2.0 features the AMD cards become more attractive offering similar performance.

If what you claim was in any way true, every 980Ti on air would have been RMA'd.
Only if every 980 Ti was running @ 4K most are not being used beyond 1080.1440/2160 according to recent Steam hardware surveys is still a niche resolution.
I give up on this subject anyway but will say for 4K gaming with max details @ 60FPS it puts a massive strain on your entire PC. PSU, CPU, GPU so if you do not have an extreme or recent case with bottom case fans as well as many other case fans a single 980 Ti is going to get hot especially around the backplate region the heat is also internal having several fans nearby does not help much. You need cold air actually underneath the card flowing into the HSF.
Fitting an AIO G10+H55 & running the pump + fans @ 100% speeds means the GPU & backplate are always well within temp specs as the liquid is chilled enough to keep temps a good 20c below the stock HSF.

So its a viable easy to fit option for anyone who needs to lower temps as long as they understand the warranty issues (MSI are ok with this BTW as long as the actual card is RMAed to them in the same condition the warranty seal on the screw being broken is ok you can easily losen the screw using long nose pliers anyway).

The MSI Gaming 6G HSF is a circa 2014 component it was designed for a much lower TDP AMD card but reused on 970/980 series as its obviously cheaper for MSI to do that than create a more appropriate HSF :(

I can only base my experience on the 2 different brands of 980Ti I have owned. I do not claim to have tested every single 980 TI HSF on the market in various cases (most reviews are done on an open bench outside a case so do not even represent accurate temps anyway).

My brother has 2 x reference 980 Ti's in SLI and runs them stable at 1450 on the core and 2000 on the memory all the while playing at 4K so you are doing something very wrong.

*EDIT*

That's in a Corsair Air 540 with 3 x 120mm fans at the front running at 800RPM, 1 x 120mm exhaust running at 800RPM and an air cooler for his CPU and as you can see it's hardly a tornado air flow wise.

To get on the Roll of Honour all you have to do is post a pic with your user name on it of your 980 Ti.

Just ordered the HG10 N980 from corsair, now to decide which cooler to get! out of curiosity is it worth going for a 120mm rad? or is a H55 all you need?

Which leads me on to a more serious post.

I've searched the thread for G10/H55 installation and understand that I have pretty much the easiest card available to put the GPU under water cooling :D

Obviously not wanting to fry anything, I just wanted to double check that I have understood the steps I need to take:

  1. Remove the existing air cooler using the 4 screws around the GPU on the backplate unplugging the connectors for the Twin Frozr cooler.
  2. Clean off the existing stock paste.
  3. Take the foam pad off the G10 backplate and affix to the 980 using the correct screw placement.
  4. Apply my new paste (thermal grizzly hydronaught in this instance).
  5. Allign and affix the H55 bolting down securely.
  6. Set the pump and G10 fan to 100% off a header.
  7. Set the H55 radiator fan to 100% (Noctua fan in this instance).

I'm sorry if this has been covered previously, but when searching for videos they always seemed to use an EVGA card. If someone has a link for the MSI Gaming 6 video tutorial that would be appreciated.

Also, if any of my steps above are incorrect or missing anything!
