Can anyone comment on whether changing/cleaning the idle control valve is a fairly simple job and also where it is located in the engine bay of a 1.8 focus?

Thanks

Just what I was thinking.

I checked the revs again this morning, seems that it stays bang on 1750rpm (2000rpm was perhaps a tad overestimated) for a minute or so, then idles at 750rpm when the engine has warmed a bit.

It's normal to rev higher when cold to warm the engine, but 2000RPM does sound a little high, especially as the weather at the moment is pretty warm as it is. I think mine revs to about 1500RPM when idling from cold.

gf's fiesta seems to have a cold idle of about 1500-1600 rpm
