Who else used Facebook and didn't see the point of it?

After numerous automated emails of people nagging me to join FB, I finally joined the dark side in Oct 2007. I was never one for adding randoms. Just had family on it, and a growing list of old classmates. I therefore used it more-or-less like Friends Reunited. When I touched based with them, I tend to write long life stories of what happened after school etc, like I'm writing an email but using Facebook's PM system. If I got replies off people, the message was normally very short. They seemed to be more interested in reading status updates (which can be several times a day), or "poking" each other. What's the point in all of that? Then there's that Farmville that now seems to be a household name even more so than WoW. Hell, if I want to play a computer game, I buy something that puts my ATI HD4850 to good use. The final straw for Facebook was applying for a job a few months back. The advert instructed me to send them a covering letter + CV. So I did, and if they touch base with me, it would normally be in the form of a phonecall or email, wouldn't you say? Nope, not with these guys. They decided that they wanted to add me as a friend on Facebook. No prior communication, no nothing, straight to Facebook they go. Plus, isn't it LinkedIn that businesses tend to use? So anyway, I didn't accept the request, left my FB page dormant for a few weeks and then I cancelled my account. I saw no point.

I find that email is more central to me. That's how it's been since 1999 for me, and will continue to be. And no, I'm not behind the times, as I do have push email on my phone :) Who's with me there?

I use facebook regularly, update my status with what i'm thinking / doing

But am a facebook loner in comarison with some with only 80 something friends. Of those they are made up of family, inlaws, friends/colleagues from previous jobs, friends/colleagues from current job, friends from school etc.. And some people i've met from overclockers.

I find it great to find out what my old work mates are up to, where they are going on holiday what they have been doing etc.. use it for keeping in touch with my family in australia.

Facebook is what you want it to be. Thats the appeal.

I don't see the harm in having a 'facebook', but I certainly don't use it everyday.

My girlfriend mainly does mine as she likes to do double the farmvile/frontiersville.

Ah, another thread on FB with the same old discussion. I predict the following responses:

1) Hate facebook, people who use it are lame, I'm cool and don't need it.
2) Don't use facebook, I can keep up with my friends regardless of online social networking.
3) Indifference to the whole thing. Neither for nor against.
4) People who like it but are not overly fussed about it, find it useful to keep contact but don't let it overcome their life.
5) People love it who use it for everything in keeping up with their 1000+ friends and informing them of their bowl movements, etc.

Job done.

I do find email more useful, but also because it contains the important FB updates that I have requested :p

I use it a lot, I have two kids and my wifes family are 250 miles away, it's good for them to see photos and even status updates from the wife or myself, it's good to know what people are up to and also if anyone needs help in any way, has any one got a ladder etc from local friends etc.

Yeah, I'm a bit of Facebook loner as well, in the sense I don't really like using it that much. People I stay in contact with tend to be on my phone or MSN still.

I don't like it that much, but do admit it's very useful (for something that's free). Upload photos of weekends with mates, using it as a massive contact list that can't be lost etc.

Facebook is great for what it is: a simple tool to stay in touch and a place for folks to look at your photographs etc. I have about 200 friends on there but only communicate with about 40 regularly (I keep the other 160 for work contacts). As I live away from my parents it's a great place to upload pics & vids of my daughter for them to see.

The games and spam on there have never been anything more that an annoyance to me but the ladies seem to like them. It's not a perfect web site, but it's okay.

I've noticed from my friends, they use there status updates to boast. Or they upload pictures just to boast. So and So has given me this, or I am going with *insert name* to town or blah blah. Annoys me.

I use facebook in the following ways:

Keep in contact with family not in the UK
Socialise with core group of friends, allowing use to arrange meet-ups and events in a centralised and easy way
Promote myself (dj stuff)
Keep abreast of my wider social circle (4 different groups of people) that I don't see that often
Caught up with some friends from school (SA), a few of whom are now in London as well
Find and share funny/interesting links/videos
Host pictures in a much simpler way than putting them on my own website

All in all, I liek.

i use facebook to mock my close friends but thats about it, oh and to rant to nobody really.
its ok , but its overused by society and id expect most peoples fb have about 75% of 'friends' that arent actually friends at all, which is all kinda sad when you think about it.

its kinda like a 'who can brag or moan the most' website.

I'm completely indifferent to it, I only use it to contact people who I cannot get hold of in the real world. I find the everyday use of it quite 'cringe worthy', call me strange but I find it a bit weird looking through images of peoples personal life, especially people I hardly know!

i joined up, got some friends on my list and old school friends etc. which was the only thing that facebook was good for imo, then i closed my account as i wasnt using it at all and was sick of getting 'XX has just got a new high-score on XX game' type spam.
i keep in touch with people i need to by non public alternatives anyways :p

Some people understand social media, some don't, some people understand it but chose not to use it and some people don't understand so slate it because they don't know what else to do.

Just because you don't see the point in it doesn't mean there isn't a point, it just doesn't suit your lifestyle.

It is hugely powerful both in marketing and in general social use.

I've noticed from my friends, they use there status updates to boast. Or they upload pictures just to boast. So and So has given me this, or I am going with *insert name* to town or blah blah. Annoys me.

hide them.
