I have SC level and a few people have been rejected for not declaring things like criminal records however small they were.

CCJs and the like also cause problems if not declared, at the end of the day if your honest in the application you should get it.

SC and DV clearance are proper government checks, done by the DVA (Defence Vetting Agency). The questions about overthrowing government are definately funny :d

Where I work there have been a few people refused SC (you have to be able to obtain SC, not actually have it). Its funny to see people suddenly frog marched out by security!

One was a Muslim who has visited Pakistan about 7-8 times in the past few years (soon to marry a woman from Pakistan) and the other had only recently returned from Australia (had been living there for about 6 years).

Apart from that they seem to give it to every tom, dick and harry!

DV clearance they try and ask you about gay experiences and what pr0n you look at on the internet apparently :p
i was interviewed as an aquaintance of someone going through clearance and when i said he didnt have a girlfriend they asked if he was gay and seemed to push the issue quite a lot, they also questioned his porn habits
possibly went into more detail because when they said "do you think he's watched porn on the internet?" i said "well yes, but probably no more than everyone does"

My understanding of the DV is that when you go for the interview they are already going to know what most of your answers should be. If you try to hide things, eg the fact that you look at poof porn then that suggests you will be open to blackmail in the future. As long as you tell them everything they already know about you then you will be fine.

I've been denied security clearance twice now, once when I applied to the RAE and the other when I applied to EDS, still have no idea why, the RAE I could understand, most of my family were from Northern Ireland and I applied around 1987 during the troubles, no idea on the other one though.

Ironically it could be because you were refused it in the past! Some excellent replies here chaps!

My old team leader at EDS was from NI and was never actually refused BC/CTC or SC clearance, it just took so long for them to process them that he just gave up! (Over 1.5yrs of back and forth)
