I picked up a 52mm/58mm reversal ring to have a quick play (£5, so not going to break the bank). First impressions are that it's very hard to get right but it should be possible to get some nice shots. The DOF is almost no existent.

Blade of grass - 6s, f/11, ISO 200

Fly wing (not very good) - 6s, f/11, ISO 200

Flower (4mm across shown in this pic) - 8s, f/11, ISO 200

The setup

Unless you have a few flashes you can set up externally and some very cooperative insects you won't get shots of anything like that unfortunately, fun thing to try if you haven't got the money for a dedicated Macro lens though.

i have the same setup but with a 35-80mm lens, get 1.8x magnification on it, i recently bought a 100mm macro lens and i'm underwhelmed by the magnification on it so going to sell it on/ trade it to fund a 70-200 F/2.8 L IS. You can have so much fun with this set up and an off camera shoe cord and flash :D

It useable magnification though ;)
Multi second exposures with tiny DOF at F11 will be fun when trying to photograph insects :p

Or you could get something like rG uses :p

Tip: Sigma 70-300 spins round and pretty much hooks onto the D70 mount (and I assume therefore, any 58mm filter lens would do the same and on most Nikon mounts) and can be used for reversal macro with needing a reversing ring.

Quite fiddly to hold though :p
