(CCC overdrive) Alternative way to overclocking the GPU

I normally use CCC overdrive (auto tune) to overclock my 5870 and it does a fair job. Is there a better way to overclock it without increaseing the risk of damaging it? Ive heard Overdrive is the weakest form of Overclocking Im a bit of a noob when it comes to Overclocking anything other than a CPU lol Im just trying to squeeze performance out of the PC without spending money :P

i use the MSI Afterburner (does not need to be MSI branded), allows custom fan graph, controlling the fan % by temperature.
