My brother works in an ambulance call centre, giving medical advice on the phone. He says some of the calls they get are shocking. Both the actual calls - stabbings and drunken injuries at night, car accidents in the day - and the timewasting calls. Apparently there are known people who will call up saying they're going to kill themselves and will just keep you tied up on the line for an hour, and it usually ends up with a shift supervisor having to tell them that they didn't kill themselves yesterday, or the day before, or any of the days before that, and that it's time to hang up now, goodbye.

He had one a while back from some mental woman saying she was having an argument with her husband and things had got so heated that her husband had cut his own foot off and was bleeding to death. They passed it over to the police, who went to the phonebox from which she was calling and took her away.

Great idea. Dealing with so many domestic small issues needs to be accounted for. These can take up so much time and hopefully the politicians who want to reduce man power on the floor level will realise this.
