To those who live in Stoke On Trent - Which areas are good?

Hey all.

This thread follows on from my discussions around getting on the housing ladder (see link below) I have viewed a few houses in the Meir Hay (Longton) area in Stoke On Trent.
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...hlight=housing
I currently live in Uttoxeter which is a nice town but I would be scraping the bottom of the barrel for the houses I can afford. Also there is not much here as it is more of a commuters town.

As of this first post I have the following comments on places to live on the eastern side of Stoke On Trent:

Weston Coyney - South side is grim. Western side is one nice big housing estate.
Longton - Few derelict factories but Meir Hay seems nice. Is Park Hall the same as Meir Hay just a few hundred metres north?
Meir Park - Lovely but out of my budget.
Dresden* - No idea.
Hanley* - Nope.
Meir - Hell no. There is a house on Rightmove that is a 4 bed end terrace for 52950. The gunshots and rape victim screams would probably keep me up at night.
Cheadle - Seems nice and is slightly cheaper than Uttoxeter.
Dresden* - Heard it is a bit meh.
Fenton* - Same as Dresden.
Normacot* - Same as Dresden.

The areas with * next to them are just based on hear say from work and I have not viewed the areas personally.

Right now I am leaning towards Meir Hay, but as my name suggestions I am open to suggestions!!!

Leek is a nice area, it's a bit "old town" too, so older buildings. Looks quite nice though.

Trentham (including New Park)? Lived there for 20 years. Also still own a house on Meir Park.

Looking on the eastern side of Stoke as friends/family are in Uttoxeter/Burton but thanks for the heads up .

All depends on what you're after, if you want more of a countryside setting then Cheadle or the smaller village of Tean nearby are both nice.

I agree, but I viewed (outside only) a 100,000 new build on Tean and it was absolutely laughably small. So small that I thought it was one house until I got closer to it! It also had a designated parking space rather than a dirveway in front of the house.

100,000 in many Stoke areas gets you a 3 bedroomed semi with a garage if you get something that needs a touch of TLC. I know there are better areas but this is far farabove the bottom end of the City and fantastic value for money.

What are you after? Village life, town life or city life? Or just a nice normal house on a nice normal housing estate?

Not after city life really. Town life I would say but on a housing estate.
Villages in the middle of nowhere don't interest me really!

Meir Hay and Park Hall are fine. Meir Hay has newer housing estates whilst Park Hall is more established but both offer excellent value for money and a nice environment. Also, both are really close to Park Hall County Park for some nice walking or mtb'ing if you're into that type of thing. The A50 is fairly close too for access to Uttox.

Saying that, Stone or Trentham are hardly miles away from Uttox and are very nice areas.

Penkhull, Hartshill, Wolstanton (the bit nearest the Theatre), Audley
maybe the upper part of Trentvale.

Longton is meh although improved by the new shops
You can get terraces near Hanley for pennies and the area isn't that bad

Trentham and Clayton are 'nice' but utterly soulless, if there was a zombie apocalypse you really wouldn't notice for weeks.

Newcastle has a reasonable nightlife (or did) and has a range of shops, good transport location.

Stone is commutable but really overpriced.
Those places you've listed, they are actually all the worst parts of Stoke

Dimple probably knows the area best

If you can't afford to live in Uttoxeter you can forget about living in Trentham, or Stone.

Id avoid dresden and normacot like the plague

Mier is worse than dresden and normacot.

Sandford Hill is ok as is adderley green.

Stone is nice, as is uttoxeter, tean and cheadle. Park Hall is near weston coyney. The south side thats grim was called coalville

Go live in Shelton, ITS GREAT.

Ok ok, I lie. Trentham was the only nicer area I know of from my time there at Uni, didn't explore the whole area though, but I enjoyed going through/round trentham.

Weston Coyney - depends where, Mrs Dimple's family lived in a very nice house
Longton - Meir Hay is OK and Parkhall is OK. Saxonfields is OK in that area.
Meir Park - Lovely but out of my budget.
Dresden* - Some of Stoke's most expensive houses are in Dresden but again I need to see what you're interested in.
Hanley* - Nope.
Meir - It all depends where in Meir because there are 4 distinct areas of which two I wouldn't live in. My mate lives in one of the bad areas in a massive property and never had any trouble.
Cheadle - Ok but they are all inbred like Leek. Give me six.
Fenton* - I've lived in 5 houses in fenton and all were a bit meh but my youngest has just moved into a nice Fenton semi.
Normacot* - This is Stoke On Trents Muslim area but there are some nice propertys.

I live in a nice area in Blurton

Yay for Trentvegas!

In all seriousness: Penkhull is very expensive; that would have been the most convenient place for me to move, but we couldn't afford that.
Hartshill seems OK, but I don't really know the area; a bit closer to Hanley than the other options I think.
People seem very down on Trentvale, but I like it here so far.

Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.

You should listen to this man - on all of the Stoke-on-Trent threads he has been spot on.

If you're looking at being close to Uttoxeter look at Parkhall, Meir Hay, some parts of Weston Coyney, Meir Park and Stone. Trenthamand Werrington are nice and quiet but are further than the others.

Avoid Meir and Normacot - saying that i've got friends who live in bad parts of both and haven't had any trouble but have heard horror stories.

I can afford to live in Uttoxeter, but I'd be scraping the bottom of the barrel as all I could afford are the rough roads or ones with no driveway.
Uttoxeter would be easy if I had a girlfriend, but I don't and am buying on my own.

Sorry mate, I've just read that back and my comment sounded a touch condecending, it must have been time of the month when i posted :P I guess what i was trying to say is, its reasonably expensive to live in either Trentham or Stone.

Werrington + Cellerhead are nice areas too.

Werrington would be my suggestion, however it depends on which side of the city you want to be.
