What's the sonar like vs HDMI ouput from a graphics card?

Considering the sonar at that price for my lounge PC, outputing to a Denon 5.1 amp.

Is the drive quiet (somewhat)? Last optical I had screamed whenever a disk was in it but I know it was unusually loud.

noob question but how does this compare with the sounds on an ASUS ROG Ranger z97 MB which I hear is already really good? Also how does using one of these work when you're watching blu-ray movies or other HD content? Does it replace the onboard sound from the graphics card, ie where do I plug in my new headset?

I'm sure some one will tell me I'm an idiot for asking these basic questions but I've always disregarded sound cards but this price is making me reconsider :)
