Installing an Arctic Accelero Xtreme IV to Sapphire 290

I am trying to fit the above heatsink to a 290 but other than a missive heatsink that fits to the back of the card there are no VRAM heatsink coolers. Surely the card will just overheat with this. Has anyone successfully installed one of these?

The website and documentation included says its compatible with the 290 and 290x.

I assume i can post a link to the item as different countries and own they OcUK.

I have ordered some Alpenföhn Passive DRAM / VRAM Chip Coolers.

The Arctic Accelero Xtreme IV is a new cooler which is pretty poor to remove the VRAM coolers from this model. If I had known I would have purchased something else. Its not even worth me returning it as would need to send it to Germany. It cant be any worse than the ref cooler :)

tbh Beer, you woulda been better off using the money for the cooler and vram sinks / tape etc and selling your 290 for a decent amount and just buying an AIB 290, thats what im doing, its less hassle and the AIB's are generally better than the ref ones too.

Whats that big black plate btw?

Apparently it cools the PCB whilst the VRAM chips catch fire :( :p

I was actually going to wait for a non ref card when the deals were on at Xmas but was told they weren't going to be available for a while and would be expensive. I will see how this goes once i have installed it.

I was in the same boat mate, then i see a Sapphire 290 for an unbeatable deal and bought that :) its served me well but its time to get something thats cooler and quieter. When i looked at the cost of slapping a solution on my 290 its going to cost the same as roughly selling mine and buying a non ref.

Look @ the pics now, amazing VRM Temps only with the Backplate, unbelievable...
He updated with new pics. Beerbaron you have the same backplate i guess.

I think so and + you can add a sidefan too= ultimate air cooler :D

The ultimate gpu air cooler is the 5870 Xtreme, it's sat atop 5870>6950>7950>290X only cost £38 back then, and a further £11 for the Xtreme II gpu bracket.;)

Looking like that big heat plate is doing a job too, didn't think it would tbh, but I still wouldn't leave the vrm's bare.

I was hoping Beerbaron had plucked up the courage to try this, without the sinks by now :D

If this produces some good results i'll order one myself.

A nice comparison of without and then with the extra sinks installed would be good too :)

Looking forward to an update.

I needed the card for gaming so couldn't risk it over heating. My DRAM / VRAM Chip Coolers arrived today from OcUK so will give it a try tonight or tomorrow.
