I was interested to learn recently that Elephants live longer both in the wild and whilst working in the Burmese logging trade than they do within zoos. They really don't like being there

zoos and large animals especially

failure of the zoo to have a large enough area, company etc. unfortunately pretty much every zoo fails these points.

Not specifically the ones killed for ivory but, as a population median, zoo elephants live shorter lives than wild ones even including those killed.

Some animals are fine in zoos but not large intelligent mammals. I hate seeing gorillas and chimps in cages. It's like putting a person in there. Orcas in sea world are the worst.

If you mean a small cage where they can hardly move, then that would be extreme cruelty. If in a spacious stimulating environment in a proper group do you know if that is like putting a person in prison?
What about Monkey World where they have rescued chimps from cruel captivity, chimps that could never be put into the wild?

/agreed with the OP in that I don't think that the elephant did it on purpose.

Only certain types of monkeys have a similar level of self-awareness to that of humans. Most animals aren't very self-aware.
