Hi all,

We were wondering what are your views on setting up an e-commerce website using a SaaS solution or using Open Source. What are your experiences with Magento, Opencart or Shopify?

Depends on your skill set, timeline and effort I'd say.

If you don't know much about development, want something rapid then Shopify etc. If you do have development knowledge and want something more flexible then use Opencart or similar.

If you have time, money and skills too, could potentially do your own solution with a web framework. That's the most flexible but like anything, has its own advantages and disadvantages.

SaaS can rapidly become expensive as it is generally based on a percentage of turnover and should your turnover become significant your costs too will become higher than the costs of running a hosted open-source solution.

It really all comes down to budget and ambition.

I'd go SaaS until you have enough revenue/profit to justify paying for custom development (or your own developer) unless you already have the expertise to build your own solution.

You'll likely have enough other things to sort out early on that you are better off focusing on building the business, custom development can get expensive fast!
