Just post what seen with my silent loops system.
Mounting the CPU unit with the logo in the correct orientation lead to worse cooling then having it with the writing upside down. Bit of a pain aesthetically but noticed temps for my i7 860 @3.66ghz went from 35c in bios, 60c in XTU and 57c in Ashes of Sing (DX 11) to 26c/ 41c & 49c .

would also advise topping up fluid as well due to Alphacool having issues with Chine filling them up fully.

Funnily enough quite a number of CPU blocks perform better when inverted for whatever reason but its usually more marginal (1-2c).

Something was epicly wrong there mate, doubt it's the orientation, probably reseating the unit has solved your issues... That is way too high of a temp spike for it to be simple orientation. As Smfyy said, it would be 1-2C at most!
