Went into the dealer today to check out what they had. They essentially were picking through all the dealer "operating stock" in the UK. Assume these cars are destined to be pre-regged should no-one buy them along the way.

Found an F30 which fairly closely matched what I was after and they were offering it for £37,754 with its list price at £45,194. They would also be able to provide an extra £2,250 off (deposit contribution) if I took finance, which they said I could cancel at any point and only pay the pro-rata interest.

Checked out the same spec through Broadspeed and they quoted £36,500 OTR and I would assume I could get the deposit contribution again anyway, as that's from BMW on any brand new car (with finance).

All in all a decent price, but not enough to get me to pull the trigger on something that wasn't exactly what I wanted.

Dentist was in today talking old bangers. He is now looking at buying my bosses X5 off him after driving it the other night so I may have the E39 next week.

It needs a new front tyre so will replace both, 235/45/17 seems to have a lot of choice. Was going to go for F1AS2 but when the rears wear out they don't seem to do it in 255/40/17 but the SC2 is available. Would I be better going for SC5 on the front then SC2 on the rear when ready? or just roll with whatever and see how it goes?

Passenger seat won't slide back or forward. Said a garage 'fixed' it then it broke again a day or two later.

Squeak from the rear suspension, advised that it was too much hassle to fix.

He says it has an oil leak, using more oil than an M54 should.

Any things I should look at first?

M54's love oil. I doubt there are many left that don't guzzle it like mad.

You can get SC3 in the rear size.

First thing I said but he does recon it's more than usual.

Will be a shock as the astra hasn't needed a drop in a year/18,000 miles.

Didn't think I saw them on blackcircles but I'll have a proper look when needed.

Check for the oil leak and the ccv piping especially the breather that goes to the rocker. Mine was torn and bodged by the previous owner and drank oil like made. Once I had replaced it and changed oil to 5w 40 it hasn't moved in the 2000 miles I've done since.

both of the m54s ive owned (02 330i from 110,000 miles to 175,000 miles and 53 z4 3.0 90,000 to 106,000 miles) have needed a litre every 1-1.5k miles. I just bought it from costco and it worked out a negligible cost per mile.

For comparison a 335D X Drive M-Sport is just a touch cheaper when the good deals are on.

Pretty good deal, shame there isn't nothing like that right now!

You can quite easily own an M3 for less than if you wanted to - a £25k AUC M3 with 2 years warranty is not going to be lose £13k over 2 years. Your ownership cost would likely be less than that deal. Ok so it won't be new, but it'll be almost as hassle free.

Just a heads up for people with a M54 of some description, you can get 4ltrs of Castrol Edge 5w30 for £25 on amazon right now

Ha, bought me some of that earlier. Cheapest I've ever found it, and needing that 1l every 1k miles, it'll come in handy.

@ADT: It's the first search that comes up on Amazon. Out of stock at the moment hence why it's showing the price of £32 (notice it's shipped by ECP) - but if you look towards the bottom left you can see the "other sellers" bit which shows £24.99 with prime. No idea when I'll get the shipment but obviously for the price it's well worth a buy.

My E46 330d has 142k miles on the clock and full BMW service history. The check engine light came on today so want to get that looked at but it's also due a service. I normally take my car to a specialist who I trust, but I'm weighing up whether or not it's worth keeping the FBMWSH ongoing?

Take it to a specialist. Most of the times they are even better than the stealers.

Yes definitely, the specialist I take my cars to is a friend and ex BMW master mechanic. I'm just weighing up the pro's and cons of keeping the FBMWSH stamped up in the service book.

The pro's will be virtually non existent at this mileage for keeping FBMWSH. You wont likely get any more money come selling time, and in all fairness, the indy specialist may actually be worth more.
