Hey,

I'm configuring a gaming desktop with a £1,100 budget and was hoping to get some opinions. This is what I have so far.

Kolink Octagon Midi Tower Gaming Case - Black
Asus Z170-E Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i5-6600K 3.9GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - OEM
Alpenföhn Brocken ECO CPU Cooler - 120 mm
Kingston Fury Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 PC4-21300C15 2666MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (HX426C15FBK2/8)
Asus GeForce GTX 1070 Turbo 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Samsung 120GB 750 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps Solid State Drive
Super Flower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black
Microsoft Windows 10 64-Bit DVD - OEM (MS-KW9-00139)

Total: £1,133.86

A few notes:
I have no aesthetic requirements. Uglier and cheaper is fine.
I only play one or two games at a time and don't store films or pictures. My current 120GB is serving me fine so I don't feel the need for larger storage or a mechanical drive.

I'm wondering whether the 1070 is slightly overkill considering I'm gaming on 2560*1080, but everything I read online seems to suggest that the 10xx are better value than the 9xx cards.

Also, there is a wide selection of 1070s--any suggestions as to which one would be a better choice?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like you've done your research, that build looks pretty solid. If you want to reduce the price, you could always drop the 1070 and get a 980Ti.

You'd be amazed how quick a 120gb SSD can fill up, I would suggest a 250gb min.

If not, just get the cheapest 1070 with a custom cooler. At 1080p, there will be very little variation between them.

You're right, maybe that 240 SSD is worth it considering how large games are getting these days.

As for the gpu, are you saying that if I go for a cheaper (not the Asus) 1070 then I have to buy a separate gpu cooler?

Picking the 1070 is tricky, there are nine different versions on OCuk. Some people are saying buy the cheapest one (KFA2) while others are being specific on vendor (stay away from Gigabyte).

Thanks!

No, I mean that those cards which are not "reference" are classed as custom coolers. Example would be the MSI Gaming. If you're not bothered by the amount you're spending on a 1070, I would suggest:

- EVGA
- MSI

I'm sure the ASUS is a good card and would be worth it but I know there have been concerns around warranty and their inability to handle it efficiently.

I'd second stepping up from the 120GB SSD - Windows will only show about 110GB and you'll lose about another 20GB on the OS so you'll only actually have about 90GB.

Build as a whole looks pretty good :)

Have to agree with this, 250 is a nice sweet spot for OS and all usual programs with plenty of head room and even space for a few games you play the most.

If you play WoW an SSD is REALLY nice, also the 0 noise from an SSD so another big +.

You can really tell the difference between SSD and Mechanical on something like Dying Light as well.
