You need to make sure you get a motherboard where you can get the correct bios to overclock the 6100, I dont know what ones, the one in this thread, would be an obvious choice as you get a guide to

Incorrect.

The 6600k base clock is 3.5ghz it boost to 3.9ghz making it 200mhz faster than the 6100.

A lot of different information in this thread

I guess I just want to know if getting a 6600k without overclocking it for now will be a good idea.... The main thing I'm struggling with is when I'm playing games and have other applications open I'm notcing my CPU usage maxing out which sometimes causes lag spikes, a better CPU would stop this from happening? I do also only have 8GB RAM at the moment but I never really seem RAM usage maxing out

With your budget your not going to get a satisfactory upgrade.

You could be right, my plan was to just get a 6600k for now though and get a z170 next time and better ram

Barely noticeable difference between an i3 6100 and i5 6600k in games? That is incorrect. I would possibly consider a i5 6400 so you can keep the motherboard you have.

well I went from an i3 6100 to a 6400..im seeing very little in way of framerate increase tbh running a 1060,seems the extra clock speed of the 6100 offsets the extra cores of the 6400 somewhat..im saving for a z170 board tho so I can OC it tho.

I'd get a Z17o mobo and OC the i3 with your first bit of the budget, and then see how you go with potentially picking up a K chip later down the line when you have some more money to spend.

How many apps do you need open when gaming?

I thought OCing non K CPUs had been clamped down on by Intel?
