what would be the best card to keep?

My brother has been offered 2 1060's or 2 970's to replace his faulty 780ti set up.

Ive been asked to sell them to give him funds towards a 1070.

so if we went for the 1060's would it be worth my while selling my current 970 and taking one of the 1060's off his hands?

mmmm I think maybe the 1060 as its newer and performs better going by this video in most games

Yea I had seen that video my only worry is the drop in vram I know the 970 has the last*512mb running slower than the first 3.5gb but I wasn't sure if this would make that much difference in games like GTA*V

The 1060 does not support sli so it's a bit odd to be offered 2 to replace a 780ti, I'd definitely grab the 2 1060's and keep one while selling 1..

+1 to being a odd compensation since you cant sli the cards, tbh i'd be pushing for a 1070 or even 2

I would take the 1060, even the 3gb version as you'll get more for it in a sale than a 970.

If they're being replaced under warranty you've being bent over and given a good rogering.

I'd be looking for dual GTX1070's to replace faulty dual GTX780Ti's within warranty.

Relative to their release periods GTX780Ti and GTX1060 3GB are totally different price brackets.

I wouldn't say so, the 1060 is ahead in some titles, they have comparable RAM also. Some people get lucky and get a decent upgrade but you need to remember that these upgrade replacements are going to be due to not having anything similar to replace with, it's not the case for the majority of warranty replacements.

*Edit: Well, on the SLI level yeah, you're right but they did offer two 970s I think.

I don't mean performance though, I mean price and market bracket. When released, the 780Ti was a high-end, expensive card. The equivalent today is the GTX1070, so that should be the replacement. The customer paid top dollar for the cards in the first place.

That the way most manufacturers usually do it.

yea the 1060's are his offer for a warranty replacement for the Sli 780ti's.

hence I was wondering if it would be worth my while taking one and selling my 970. for what ive seen of the 1060 6gb in valley it scores slightly higher than my overclocked 970 but I cant find anything on the 3gb version. Im also thinking should I hold off and wait on a second hand 980ti...

Doesn't work that way anymore though, after 6 months if an item can't be replaced, allowance for usage is deducted.

It goes down to how good or not they want to accommodate you after 6 months.

Personally I'd try and get them to give me a 1070 instead of two of anything-especially since 1060's don't do Sli.

I would agree with you there. I have said as much but I think there playing the hardball about it only had a month left on warranty.

I suggested this lastnight even try for a single 1070 for both 780ti's I think hes going to try this angle today.

A 970 is a perfect like for like replacement of the 780ti in performance terms.

EVGA replaced recently 780 or 780ti with 6gb 1060.
Which is more or less in par in perf.
1060 3gb is not the same as the 1060 6gb though, not because of the memory but because is chopped 1060.
And because you cannot sli the 1060s makes the whole offer terrible.
If they cannot up to 1070s, ask for a pair of 480s 8gb non reference. At least they can CF.

Unfortunately I don't think that's how it works now. If they haven't a like for like replacement than they offer you an equivalent card, but it's based on performance not price or market bracket.

But, no matter which way you look at it the 1070 would never be a warranty replacement for a 780ti.

Price? then the 1080 is the only option.

Market Bracket? Again, it's probably the 1080 as the there is no 1080ti available at the moment.

Performance? 1060/970.

I think it would be asking a lot to expect a card double the performance of the 780ti as a replacement.

Edit: They might offer one 1070 as replacement as you can't SLI 1060's. But then again, the other option they gave was the 970, which you can SLI.

OP I would definitely push for two 6GB 1060's. They will have more value than the 3GB ones.

Performance wise they line up pretty well but out of the 970's and 3gb 1060's I'd got with the Pascal cards even though they can't be sli'd while 970's can.

To me it seems simple enough, What card would you prefer today a 970 or a 3gb 1060?
I personally think it's a no-brainer , The 1060 wins every time for me, It's a newer generation on a die shrink with improved performance on the new api's and VR which will all help when you want to sell it on in 2 or 3 years time, So sell your 970 and get a 1060, I think you're being offered an okay deal considering how long you've had them so trade up.

The replacements will have no warranty left, a week on one card is all that's there.

I'm not sure how much Gigabyte care about the price of the cards when sold... They were 560-640 on the receipts I have, and they're offering £230 cards of comparable performance to replace them. It's a good point tho.

well that beats my 970 by over 500 lol. my cpu isnt as good but i doubt its 500+points worse
