Hi there,
Since my motherboard Evga z77 ftw doesn't have m.2 slot I have to buy adapter. My question is - will it affect SSD's speed? I am about to buy 950 pro m.2 512GB

I would say it's the slot you plug it in that will define your speeds. If you can get x4 v3.0 lanes from one of your PCIE slots then it won't be limited. If you have to use a x2/x4 v2.0 slot then yeah I think it will be.

I'm also tempted to buy one of those HBAs and a smaller PCIE M.2 drive to play with in my Gigabyte z77x board.

950 Pro is NVMe so you won't be able to boot off it in a z77 board without a bios mod.

If you put it in one of the PCIe x16 slots, it will run at full speed, but your GPU will be down to x8 rather than x16 (which should not make a difference)

If you are or ever want to go Crossfire or SLI, then you will have to put the SSD in a PCIe 2.0 slot, and will loose speed.

I am kind of confused. Can I put this drive either in M 2 slot and PCIe ? 950 Pro may not work but the other one will? I am not thech guy so I don't understand it well.

These should work fine. The adapter and the M.2 SSD. Put the SSD into the adapter then the adapter into a PCI-E slot.

I need to buy something on newegg

Is there any difference between 950pro and ssd you mentioned? I like it because it's black, looks better.

Yup that adapter will be fine. The 950 is slightly faster but i don't think it'll work with your board as NVMe is not supported on Z77.

On newegg search for item number: N82E16820147426

That one is AHCI and should work without any problems in your motherboard.
