We are looking for something to hold, pics, music, films, audiobooks. Also documents for work - photos, word, excel docs etc

So its a bit of allsorts really. There are two pcs, two laptops and 2 tablets all connected to the network also.

So there are many options like the qnap 231 / 251, Synology DS216j / 215j

or something else?

There doesnt seem to be a clear winner or standout selection really.

Also interested and in the market for a cheap(ish) NAS... Similar requirements, will just be for random documents, photos, music etc.

May also end up using it to stream videos to the TV.

I've been looking at the Synology DS216j, DS216PLAY and WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra.

Not sure really what's best in terms of reliability, performance and a decent interface/extras?

My experience going (really) cheap on a NAS is often a false economy - you are better off spending a bit more to get the reliability, features and so on.

Largely between QNAP and Synology it will come down to which one has the features in your price range and/or which one you prefer the software eco system of - you should be able to test a live demo of both from their web sites.
