Hi all.

So a while ago i deiced i wanted to water cool my desktop system and make some upgrades. But after doing some research and look at the cost to do this, got me thinking on the performance boost i would get was minimal. My desktop already plays most games maxed out in 4K, with about 30-60 fps.

So the money i had saved for that is now have spare. Now i would like to buy a gaming laptop. I travel away from home a couple weeks a year so i would like a good gaming laptop to take with me. Plus my friends can use it to play games with me while i use my desktop.

I have see one that i like the sound of but i was wondering if its as good as it sounds, the last laptop i had sounded good but once i got it i was disappointed as it did not play the games on the settings i wanted.

So the laptop i have seen is priced at £1560 ($2079) so this is the spec of the laptop;

CPU: i7-6700K Quad Core (4.00GHz, 8MB Cache, 4 cores 8 threads)
RAM: 16GB Hyper Impact 2133MHz DDR4
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5
SSD: Samsung 500GB (540MBs Read / 520MBs Write)
HDD: 1TB (8MB Cache 5400rpm)
Screen: Octane 15.6" Matte LED 1920x1080 G-Sync
Card Reader: 6 in 1
Optical Drive: None
Audio: Sound Blaster X-Fi MB5
Battery: 8 Cell Lithium Ion (82WH)

So do you think that this laptop is value for money and should it play the latest games in 1080, mid to max settings with around 30fps?

games i will probably play on this laptop a lot are;

Dead Rising 1, Rise of Tomb Raider, GTA V, Fallout 4, Skyrim, Overwatch, Star Wars Battlefront and Starcraft 2

Wow is the mobile 1060 really that much better than a 970M?

I had no idea the 1XXX series graphics cards were that much better than the 9XXM model.

I'm looking at getting a new laptop around christmas time and I think i'm going to go for a 1070 as it's 'mid range'. Would it be as good as a previous 980m?

They are pretty much desktop GPU's. The 1070 has more cores than the desktop version and is clocked lower iirc.

6700k is overclockable, if you don't plan on overclocking drop it down to a non-k processor and then swap out the SSD for a PCIE SSD.

the price differance is only £20 for the 6700k to the 6700. plus the 6700 runs at 3.4ghz and the 6700k runs at 4.0ghz so i would rather spend the extra £20 and get the extra 0.6, plus i will have the option to over clock later on.

as for the pcie ssd for a laptop thier priced abit higher than i would like and adding one to the build even swapping it for the normal ssd woudl take it out of my budget.

even after i put my order in i called them up to ask for a change. i have altered the 2 hard drives again. i orignaly wanted 2 1tb 7200rpm ones but they were out of stock and not due back in till the 20th of next month.

so i ordered it with 2 2tb 5400rpm but i was worried they would bottleneck for my gaming and be slow to copy my media across to.

so after i had purcashed it i have got them to make this the new hard drive layout;

HDD1: 750GB WD Black 2.5" (7200rpm, 16mb cache)
HDD2: 750GB WD Black 2.5" (7200rpm, 16mb cache)
M.2 SSD: 250GB Crucial MX200 2280 SSD (555MB read | 500MB write)

the m.2 ssd will be used for my os and software. on my desktop i only take up 146gb for all my software and the os so i will still have room for updates on it.

the 2 750gb hdds will be used for my games and media :)

The WD Black drives are awesome I had 2 in RAiD0 in an old clevo machine and they were faster than the crappy M.2 Kingston SSD I had in the machine. Just a shame you can't get larger black drives in the 2.5" form factor.
