Say for example I have my Pi, I install Raspbian... Then what?

Easy to configure?

Will be used for web browsing, iPlayer and streaming videos/music from network share.

Thanks.

The Pi isn't that good when used as a desktop but they're great if you give them one thing to do. I have 3 one as a network music player another for some retro gaming and one as a network attached storage solution

Was looking at using a Raspberry for https://libreelec.tv/

Can you use it to share media directly from a Windows share?

Yes thats what I do, got a server with loads of videos and music on it (windows shares)

I have tried both openelec and osmc , settled on osmc https://osmc.tv/

It can also talk to my server pc that runs mediaportal ( has tv and satelite cards in it) , it can display the tv listing , and watch live tv using the servers cards, which is cool

beauty of the pi is that you can just swap SD's and you have a whole new computer.

I run Openelec for media, reading from my windows PC on the network.

Raspbian is a good basic system, we play scratch on it for my 5 year old daughter.
