Why do so many ISPs limit upload?

I upgraded today from Hyperoptic 100Mb/100Mb to the 1Gb service. It really is something else being able to download a 1Gb file in 10 seconds

Why do so many ISPs limit upload?

Virgin Media has a technical limitation due to the nature of cable TV. CATV is designed to transmit huge amounts of data, not receive it, that's why Virgin Media is technically the best widely available consumer grade ISP in the UK today. To let people upload things via the CATV network, they need to implement something called a "return path" which has high technical limitations by nature because CATV is designed for forward transmission.

The likes of BT/SKY/whatnot, well this is just a method of milking every last drop out of our old analogue POTS telephone lines. I don't even know why that crap still exists. Should have killed it ages ago, now we're stuck with it because most people don't mind slow internet connections.

After almost two months of moving into our new build house and having to rely on my 4GEE WiFi for a connection (costing £30 every 4-5 days to top up - I work from home!), our line has finally been activated.

100/20, FTTP. Not quite maxing it out but the builder only puts in a Cat6 run from where the fibre enters the property (under the stairs) to the front room. Connecting via Router 5G WiFi -> Netgear EX7300 WiFi Extender which then connects to a switch in my office for my PC, small server, etc.

I was using Powerline adapters but the speeds are much better with the EX7300 and connection has been stable so far. May do my own Cat6 run from under the stairs to the office at some point but may mean running the cable outside.

(I very much dislike how new build developers lock out BT/Virgin/etc from providing their services here, so we essentially only have two choices for Internet)

This is my speed on the 50 mb package.

There was a storm here and lightning hit the house somewhere knocking out sky tv and my broadband.

Got a new router yesterday and installed today and i look at my speed and am getting over 70mbps and am happy with my internet.

used to get 55mbps before.
