They have dropped the max price for vehicles on the scheme to £25,000.

I don't see what the point in changing the limit is. Whether or not the vehicle costs £25k or £40k, the cost to the taxpayer is exactly the same. It's the disabled customer who pays the extra.

Other changes include no nominated drivers under 21, nominated drivers must live within 5 miles of the disabled person and under 25's can only drive up to a max of insurance category 16 vehicles.

Just reading the comments on the Daily Mail website. Quite saddening to read some of the jealousy and bitterness aimed towards disabled people.

Sounds like a step in the right direction.

All sounds like good changes to me :).

I'm sure there will be someone whose genuine need will be messed up by the new rules, but unfortunately it's just as PhillyDee and marl said - too many people have been abusing the system ruining it for those whose need is genuine.

I am disabled, and I think those new changes are completely sensible! It gets abused, maybe not intentional but still abused.

I actually do think it's a step in the right direction as well.

I actually have a motability vehicle myself as I receive DLA for serious heart and spinal issues. I obviously follow these stories as many genuinely disabled people on the congenital heart defect forum I go on are getting quite paranoid that the fraudsters activities could end up leading to total abolition of the scheme.

But as I say, I agree with the changes, as long as people who may need more specialist vehicles for wheelchairs and scooters are still catered for (which i'm sure they will be).

As far as i'm concerned, if you can use a normal car, and something like a Titanium X Mondeo is not good enough for you, then you are greedy beyond comprehension.

Basically people who cannot get around are paid the higher rate mobility allowance by the DWP. It is about £55 a week. If they so wish, instead of recieving this money, they can use it to lease a car of their choice. Some cars are quite expensive and require a non refundable deposit. Basically, Motability purchase the car you choose from the dealer and you lease it off them.

So for this £55 a week, you get a car, insurance for 2 people, maintenance, windscreens, tyres and RAC cover. Vehicle tax is usually provided to disabled poeple even if they do not have a motability vehicle.

You have this car for 3 years. It then goes back to motability and you can choose another.

Perhaps then it is about image? If it is then it's very petty and demeaning concerning choice.

So they get £55 a week plus Disability Living Allowance, so all you have to do is put petrol in, a guy in the next street gets it and he had a hip replacement, can walk, all he does is walk from his door to the car which is about 10 yards. Also when he moved onto a brand new car his son ended up with his old one.

Thought it was for the most serious cases in disability. Add in the cost of insurance/tax its a massive saving. No wonder its abused, its basically a free car. £220 towards the payment of a car is crazy.
