Hi all,

Can someone please settle an argument

Does someone earning £43,002 pay £1 at 40% tax or £43,002 at 40%

a I understand it, that person would be taxed at:

£11,000 at 0%
£32,001 at 20%
£1 at 40%

however, someone I'm arguing with thinks anyone earning over £43,001 pays the higher rate on all earnings.

===

Personal Allowance Up to £11,000 0%
Basic rate £11,001 to £43,000 20%
Higher rate £43,001 to £150,000 40%
Additional rate over £150,000 45%

Ask them what the take home pay would be on someone earning £30,000 and £40,000 using their system, then why would anyone take a job between 40-52k when they would be paid less than someone on less than 40k.

Just ask them to prove their understanding with some maths.

When the numbers don't add up, you can just grin at the confusion on their face.
