Upgrade 2500k to 2700k for VR worth it?

Am I correct in thinking hyperthreading is better for VR?

I have a 2500k at the moment and on a budget after breaking the bank for the HTC Vive!

My motherboard doesn't overclock H61, so thinking of upgrading my board and getting a 2700k and overclocking, will match with a 1080 as well.

Your thoughts?

I can't afford DDR4 upgrade :(

I really doubt it would be worth it. I was looking for a replacement for my 2500k when my motherboard fried it a few months ago, and from what I remember 2700k's are ridiculously expensive second hand.

If the bios in your new motherboard takes a 3570k, that might be a better idea, as they are only ~£90 instead of £200 for the 2700k, and their performance is almost the same I think. I think most motherboards that take a 2700k will take the 3570k if you have updated the bios to the latest available. Or you could just stick with the 2500k and overclock it, it wouldn't be that far off the 2700k either.

You're better off finding a cheap Z68/Z77 board and overclocking your i5.

If you really want an i7 the 2600K will be cheaper and still overclock to similar levels to the 2700K.

You would be very luck to get one for that IMHO. Usually more £120 or £130.

If at all... Popular auction sites tend to list any Sandy/Ivy i7 for prices that are almost as-new, and they don't last long in the MM when they're a fair price :/

Really regretting not buying the 2600k when it was the new thing. Didn't know I'd still be on the same socket/mobo after four years...

Some times you can be lucky, I managed to pick up an Intel Core i7 2700K on ebay for £80 (shipped to Denmark, so it was more like £70). I actually exchanged a 2500K for this CPU and I think it was a fine upgrade.
On the other hand I have also been able to find a Core i7 3770K for £65 for my parents PC.
So all in an - patience then you'll find a good deal;)
