Hi, my colleague has been complaining that his computer is slow. Particularly doing excel work and number crunching. I checked for the obvious stuff but seems his CPU is weak.

It's a Core 2 duo E7500. Running at around 3Ghz. Socket LGA 775

What would be a good but cheap upgrade for this?

Thanks

Can pick up used q6600's for pennies these days, and slap a cheap ssd in; job done. Just make sure the motherboard can support the CPU before pulling the trigger, as some of the lower end 775 boards don't support the higher fsb the q6600 needs, IIRC.

Look at the socket 775 Xeon processors - but be sure to check motherboard compatibility.

True, they're less well known so can be a bargain, and potentially better chips. Still have a list of the models:

X3230, X3220, X3210, X3380, X3370, X3360, X3350, X3330, X3320, L3360

(I was hunting for one a while back. Settled on an X3320=Xeon version of a Q9300.)
