Only just spotted this thread - having trouble deciding between a 1070 and 1080 for 3440x1440.

Obviously the 1080 is faster but the price difference is hard to swallow. Is a 1070 enough or am I going to be turning settings down?

just did a quick search on youtube and you can find several reviews of a 1070 running at that resolution. Here's one : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-ObmAe6hPU

By the looks of it, it seems it's good enough.

You'll be using limited AA and turning down a few settings here and there to maintain 60 FPS in many titles.

At 60 FPS, I would say a 1070 is decent at this resolution. A 1080 is much more powerful though, and I would recommend that for 100hz monitors.

Thanks for the input.

It does seem that the 1070 is just about enough to run at this res with most of the candy turned on but my concern is that, if it's only just good enough now, newer games are only going to struggle more. Thinking the 1080, pricey as it is, might give me a bit more longevity.

100% correct sir. with a 1080 you'll be safe for years to come.

Makes me chuckle. Few months ago people were advising a 980ti chomps through 1440p ultrawide at max but now suddenly the 1070 and 980ti no longer can and people must turn down stuff. Daft. 1070 is fine and so is a 980ti.

You have three choices

buy a 1080 now and enjoy (can max siege at 100fps 3440x1440, give you a steady 60fps on witcher 3, as long as your willing to tweak settings will serve you well for the next 2+ years)

or buy a used 980ti (this is still a beast) and wait for the 1080ti

open a savings account and become a monk

Well it's all relative and a question of what settings and framerates you want or are prepared to accept.

From what I could tell, at this resolution, it does appear that the 1080 manages to comfortably exceed 60fps in most games whereas the 1070 struggles a bit more to manage this. Of course that's not to say sub-60fps is unplayable or anything like that, but I do consider it to be a bit of a "threshold".

In the end I just said "screw it" and the 1080 is on the way :)

Well obviously if a 1080Ti appears soon for the same money I'll be well cheesed off but these are the gambles we take. I personally don't believe there will be a Ti any time soon as the 980Ti was a response to the Fury-X so we won't see a 1080Ti until AMD can beat the 1080.

Money-wise I can afford this stuff without any problems so it's just a case of justifying it to myself. In some ways it'd be easier if I didn't have the money as the decision would be taken for me :)

whatever we do, in a few months something better will turn up, so I suggest just enjoy your 1080 and if a 1080TI does appear, just ignore it. It's not like you will have issues with any game any time soon.

or you can do what I plan to do, sell the 1080 before TI hits the market and then buy again. You can justify it as an upgrade to a card which can do 4k quite nicely :)

In The Witcher 3, a GTX 1080 will let you enable Hairworks while maintaining 60 FPS at ultra. With the 980 Ti/1070 you have to turn Hairworks off or turn a couple of other settings down.
