As the title, would be looking at the 4gb version and hopefully unlock to 8gb, although I'm not sure if it was just the first batch?
I don't want to go up to 1060 prices. Or I'm thinking maybe a second hand 980? I was even tempted by a 780ti, but figured it wasnt worth it.
Whats your thoughts? Oh I game at 1080, may upgrade to a higher res in the future, probably 1440. Play a complete variation of games, mostly newer ones.

The 780 isn't really struggling, but having to drop some settings, due to the vram I think.
I can't bring myself to spend £250+ on a gpu right now tbh. I've just upgraded most of my other stuff and the GPU is obviously the week point, just wanted a little more tbh. Ideally looking at £150- possibly 200 max

Could you factor in the sale of the 780? They are still selling quite well.

That's no better than a 480?
Potentially cheaper though, although with a custom 4GB 480 available for under £200, buying a used 970 would be a poor choice IMO, unless you were getting it for closer to £100 (which isn't likely). I sold my 780 a few weeks ago via eBay and got £135 for it, which wasn't too bad.

a quick glance at completed listings on a popular auction site would show that you would need around £215 ontop of selling the 780 to afford a 980ti. Which is the minimum card I would consider moving to from a 780.

I thought a 480 or 980 would be a nice boost, but obviously not.
I was factoring in the selling of my gpu, didn't want to spend that much extra, might have to reconsider though. Was hoping the 980ti was going to drop more with the 1070/1060 release.

It would be. As someone who's owned both a 780 and a 980 in the past year, there's no contest. I had my 780 at 1241MHz and it still came nowhere near the 980 (also overclocked to around 1500MHz). A 780 at those sort of speeds performs around the level of a mildly-overclocked 970 in situations where it isn't being crippled by VRAM or a lack of driver support. It's just a matter of whether the upgrade is enough of one to warrant the extra outlay or not. My opinion is that it absolutely would be if you could get enough for your 780 that a 480 or a 1060 would only be another £100 or so on top.

I wouldn't get enough for the 780, as even with the GPU block I can't see me getting anymore than £120-130 which doesn't bring the 1060 close enough and I'm not convinced it's much better than a 980?

To be honest, I only really mentioned the 1060 for fanboy balance reasons. A 480 would be the smart buy IMO, even if it's the 4GB Nitro. I'd absolutely pay an extra £75 or so on top of the 780 money for an upgrade to that. Better performance, more VRAM, a warranty, driver support... it would be a much better all-round experience for not much money. Ultimately, there really isn't another option beyond going up to the 8GB 480s or a 1060, or even further to a Fury or 980 Ti, and won't be for a long time. These cards have only just launched. It'll be a year or more before we see anything better for the money, so the question really is if you want to be stuck with the 780 for another year plus. Or hope that used 980 (Ti)/390X/Fury prices crumble I suppose, but then they'd take used 780 prices with them.

If you're staying 1080p, the 780 should be fine for most big games with a few settings at high as opposed to very/high ultra and lower aa. It does struggle at 1440p - 980ti/1070 minimum for 60fps+ and the settings up.
