2500K dilemma

Hi guys,

I currently game at 2560 x 1440 on the following :

i5 2500K @ 4.5Ghz
Noctua U12p
16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical
Asus P8P67 pro

Also, I have a Zotac Amp Extreme 1070 on the way.

The question I keep asking myself and need help answering is : Do I need to make the jump to a 6700K now whilst the prices are still relatively close to pre-Brexit (knowing the pound will likely fall further), or do I continue to throttle my trusty 2500K hoping it continues to be relevant for a couple more years?

I guess other things to consider are current resale value of my core rig now vs in a couple of years + the current cashback offer on.

Appreciate it's not the easiest thing to answer, otherwise I would have bought a new system by now! Maybe it is just the shock of having a CPU for 5 years!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/opinions!

I guess the only thing to consider is whether you need the latest mobo chipset and connections like M.2, USB C etc...

Otherwise I'd stick where you are and wait for a decent upgrade, although to be honest the 6700k does show some pretty decent gains for gaming, even over all the enthusiast 4+ core chips so it could give worthwhile performance gains for you with a 1070.

You obviously also have to factor in the mobo and DDR4 cost.

Yea i'm not bothered about USB C or M.2, however I may go down the upgrade route now. Not sure there will be a decent time to do this again in the near term and I'm guessing the 2500K will only fall further behind as games start to move on.

Hopefully the 6700K will also have a 5 year shelf life!

I've gone with buying the upgrade gear over the last week(6700K), price of their stock will only go up as new stock arrives, Corsair 16GB DDR4 3200 ram could be had for £67 last week!.

ended up with :
Asus Z170 Ranger
6700K
Noctua u14s
Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200 Red LED

Oooops!

Still, should go nice with Zotac 1070 if it ever shows up!

I made the jump from 2600k to 6700k. The difference isn't massive, but games are smoother due to a higher minimum FPS. It does seen to handle highly intensive scenes better (less noticeable FPS dips).

My order ended up getting delayed so I bottled it and cancelled. It was a lot of money for probably not much return.

I think i'll wait for the next Intel iteration and make do with the Zotac amp extreme 1070 for the medium term.

I'd go even further and wait for the next one after cannon lake so you get a whole new architecture.

Yes, very difficult to recommend an upgrade as my 2500k if still going strong. With a 1070 in there now at 1440p I'll struggle to justify an upgrade until 2018 I think.

Was wondering a about this too, 2500k @ 4.5ghz since 2011!

Running 970 SLI and do wonder if they need more CPU to help them breathe.

Not any real suspicion that the cpu is letting me down but do wonder about frame times and minimum fps...

thought I would post an update on this to those in a similar position to me.

Got my 1070 Amp Extreme running today and wow it really does give these 2500k/2600k a new lease of life.

GTA V at 1440p, very high everything at a steady 60fps whilst running below 50C. I am quite pleased :p
