whats the point of custom beefy cards if voltage is locked  or it will have l2 bios like 680 did for while ...
I guess we'll have to wait and see what BIOS modders do, but if there's any truth to the claim that even hardware mods are proving unsuccessful in removing the lock, I wouldn't hold my breath.

You're assuming voltage = power.
Both my 980ti's did their best work on stock volts, even the little that afterburner allowed just led to higher temps and instability. Opening up the power limit allowed them to stretch their legs though.

I have taken a bit of a crazy turn today and am actually considering getting a couple of 1080's (most likely MSI Gaming)

Hmmm... Or do I just get a couple of 1070's save 4-500 quid and wait for big pascal or volta?

Well if you plan to get big Pascal, what do you then need the power of 2 1080's for?

I'd say 2 1070's and then big Pascal is the more sensible option.

Been waiting for the Anandtech review to go up for the 1070 but noticed that it was already in the bench data base. Ran the numbers for it against the 1080 to see how they stack up at 4K.

Code:
Anandtech GXT 1070 v GTX 1080 Founders Edition 4K benchmarks
26.1 Rise of the Tomb Raider (DX11)
18.6 Dirt Rally
22.4 Ashes of the Singularity (DX12)
24.5 Battlefield 4
27.1 Crysis 3
25.1 The Witcher 3
34.1 The Division
23.4 Grand Theft Auto V
27.1 Hitman (DX11)

Good find. I'll stick with a single 1080 rather than two 1070s I think.

Which proves my point - the excuse the costs are going up does not hold. Doubling margins is not indicative the costs are really going up as much as people think.
No, you're mistaking the idea that because company is making a decent profit and is selling a lot of product, that they will somehow decide to slash prices out of the goodness of their hearts. And that overall profits = individual profit margins.

Nvidia is doing so well not only because they're making some sort of profit on cards they produce, but also because they've managed to secure a very big majority of the marketshare in that space of time. It was not previously as big as it is now. And with the growth of the PC gaming sector, it means they are selling a LOT more cards than they were before. Even moderate profit margins with mass quantities adds up to a LOT of overall profit.

Same here I was debating whether to go 1070 sli but the games I play the 1080 has a 25-30% advantage over it so even if sli scales to like 70% it'll be only 40% faster which 10-15% if that can be brought back with an overclock and you won't have to deal with sli issues :)
