I have a Intel i7 3820 overclocked @3.60, If I was to buy a Nvidia 1080 GTX graphics card would the speed CPU cause it to bottleneck.
Also would my motherboard be ok, I have a Asus Maximus IV Extreme.

I'd say that there's some life in your cpu yet, though a new processor will certainly unleash more value out of a high end card like the 1080. If that's the card you want, then get it, but perhaps consider moving up to a new platform not too terribly far down the line. That's what I'd do anyway. :)

Go for it I'd say, your results could be better but you'll still get to experience most of what the card has to offer. On a 4690K I experienced a huge jump when upgrading from a 970 to a 980 Ti.
