MX300 capacity significantly less than advertised?

I bought a 525GB M.2 MX300 drive that is now my boot drive. Delighted with performance coming from my MX100 2.5" SSD

However, capacity has always been 489.89GB even when the drive wasn't my boot drive, I can't see any unallocated space in disk manager.

Is this normal? I feel robbed of 35GB!

It's perfectly normal. Due to the way a computer calculates bytes. For instance, 1kb is actually 1024 bytes and not 1000.

Normal and highly annoying, especially then you get over 2 or 3TB

Yep, my 3tb drives actually have 2.72tb of storage.

That's a big old chunk of difference from the 'advertised' amount.

same with SSDs and HDDs, you never get the full space.

I have a 250GB SSD and get about 235GB

Yeah I was aware of this, 35GB just seemed excessive.

Terabyte v Tebibyte.

HDD manufacturers use Terabytes, Operating Systems use Tebibytes.
