As luck would have it I've just changed jobs which stopped me buying a new gaming laptop early this year, because we now have the 10 series
The two I'm considering to buy before xmas are...

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...-intel-i7-6820hk-gaming-laptop-lt-249-ms.html

erm won't link the second, don't want to get told off :D but it's the 17' Dell alienware with the new 120hz g-sync screen but with the 1070. Little cheaper depending on cover etc.

So I like the spec of the MSI but have been a little put off by some reviews, then there is the alienware and I'm looking at that because...well always fancied owning one.
My questions are do I really need the gtx 1080 if I'm purely gaming and is the 120hz g-sync a must for gaming?
Thanks :D

Anyone know about the 1080 with heating problems? Because if the 1070 is good enough I will go that route instead. Need it to last a couple of years at least.

what games are you going to be playing?

Like most it will be WoW but I do tend to buy the odd fps like Doom or Fallout when they arise, so I need a laptop to be able to cope with those moments.

It's either the MSI GT73 VR 34 or 35 vs the alienware from what I can see atm

I have a few points for you, purely my opinion;

- Avoid a 4k screen on a 17" laptop, you just wont see the benefit
- With the point above made, a GTX1080 will be complete overkill to play the games you have shown interest in at 1080p
- Can I suggest a MSI GT73VR-6RE, will tick every box for you
- GT73VR-6RE specification is 17" FHD 120HZ, i76820HK, GTX1070, 32GB and 512 SSD in RAID0

I own the MSI and stepped down from a GTX1080 equipped machine. All I can say is that I wish I made the move earlier and avoid wasting a lot of money.

Check out the MSI owners thread for some pictures and benchmarks.

Thanks for the advice, I read your post which is what got me looking at the GTX73 -34 plus looking at the alienware 1080 it's getting into the silly price range with g-sync

No problem. If you have any other questions I will do my best to help.

The GT73VR-6RE has G-SYNC, for what its worth.

On the other hand, he'll be future-proofed for many years to come!

But you're for sure right about 4K on a laptop. There is zero benefit to playing in 4K over 1080p on a laptop (unless you're connecting at an external monitor)

The 1080 in a laptop is good but there are quite a few reports of it overheating and clocking down to a standard below the 1070!!

If you can afford it go for the MSI GT73VR with the 1070 and 120hz G-sync!

I've got the 15" with 60hz and G-sync and it's a great laptop.
