I've just installed a Crucial MX100 256GB SSD that I've had lying around for ages into a basic Acer laptop, and it has made a massive difference in speed :)

The Samsung SSD on my main PC has Magician running - is there a Crucial equivalent that I should install? I've checked on the Crucial website and it doesn't seem so, but thought I'd check on here.

And just generally, are there any other bits I need to check/install when moving from HD to SSD on a Win 10 laptop?

It all seems to be working OK though...

Cheers.

In 'Device Manager' in Windows 10, under "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" I get "Standard SATA AHCI Controller".

Does that mean that AHCI is enabled for the drive?

No you have to do it in the BIOS.

When you enter the BIOS if it's not set to AHCI leave it alone and boot into windows.

Start REGEDIT and look for this line :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci\StartOverride

Change the 0 DWORD value from 3 to 0.

Reboot, and change your SATA controller to AHCI in BIOS. Now let it boot into safe mode, WIN 10 will install required drivers for AHCI.

Now with a normal boot you will boot into Windows with AHCI drivers.

The above was taken from Tomshardware and is for Windows 10.

The AHCI thing seems a pretty fundamental issue when upgrading from HDD to SSD.

I've upgraded on my main PC as well as my laptop without picking this issue up. I'll set up a separate thread unless anyone can point me to an obvious idiot's guide...
