I thought this might be an interesting idea for the forum and would give a nice gauge of everyone's different musical tastes across the generations.

Basically there will be three discussion threads in which people of the set age group can post a selection of answers to music related questions. The idea is to get a broader view of what artists different generations rate and feel have made a big impact on their listening. I want to try and keep it as condensed as possible, so there will only be a few categories. If it goes well, I'll consider adding more categories later.

Age groups:-

<14-19yrs old - Link
20-28yrs old - Link
29yrs old+ - Link

On to the categories and a brief description of them:-

Age:- More out of interest to guage if there's much split within the generations.

A. Five favourite bands.

This one is as simple as it sounds. List your five favourite overall bands, not just the latest bands you like at the minute but the five bands you consistently find yourself listening to. Rate them as follows:-

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

B. Most influential bands of our generation.

This one is a bit more involved. List the top five bands who you think have made the biggest contribution to music since you've been listening to music.

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

C. Most influential bands of all time.

This one encompasses all the bands since Chuck Berry first picked up a guitar :) Again, top five.

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

The questionnaire will be open until the 25th of August.

Once that date closes, I'll announce the winners for each age category and the overall winners based on number of votes in each category.

I'd also really like there do be some high quality discussion and reasons given for your choices. This should hopefully get some good debate going over bands who some people might not have heard before. Try and keep it as civilised as possible and don't let it turn into arguments such as 'X is far better than Y because Y suck'.

Also, try and stick to your own thread! Tempting though it might be to poke the kids or the geriatrics in the eye with your musical stick of knowledge, it'll also be interesting to see who can produce the best discussion topic!

Let the discussion commence!

5.Chuck Berry

My reasons for section B

Pink Floyd changed the way bands recorded and invented the concept album.
Listening to Dark side of the Moon, Wish you were here or the wall with headphones on was a part of growing up! Also seeing the Wall performed live (with full line up) was an experience I'll never forget!

Van Halen -Eddie Van Halen re invented the guitar and changed the way everyone played for the first time since Hendrix! Can you remeber the first time you herd Eruption?........Oh My God!!!!!

Sex Pistols...launched the whole Punk thing into the mainstream!

Led Zep....all other HM bands have a little Zep in there somewhere!

Queen -mixed Pomp/Glam with outstanding musical talent and some of the best rock/pop anthems ever written! Where would bands like the Darkness be without Freddy,Brian,John and Roger?

A. Five favourite bands.

1. Black Sabbath
2. Pink Floyd
3. Rush
4. Jane's Addiction
5. Direct tie between Megadeth, pre-black album Metallica, and Iron Maiden.

B. Most influential bands of our generation.

1. Metallica - long-hair heavy metal, a new way to rock.
2. Madonna - often imitated, but never duplicated. Just... wow!
3. Pearl Jam - the first of the Seattle style music.
4. Nirvana - Exploded the whole grunge music scene.
5. Devo - began the techno-pop style and made it popular and fun.

C. Most influential bands of all time.

1. Black Sabbath - what rock music doesn't have traces of Toni Iommi in their style?
2. The Beatles - Let's take every known music style, and ignore it. Others will follow our lead.
3. Led Zeppelin - showed that you can jump around in genre within the same album.
4. Madonna - See #2 above.
5. Grand Master Flash - began the rap/hip-hop style we still use today.

Nice idea... looking forward to reading everyone's responses.

A. Five favourite bands.

1. Guided By Voices
2. Depeche Mode
3. The Cure
4. Pixies
5. Nine Inch Nails

GBV (and Robert Pollard's related projects) are probably my favourite band ever - mainly due to the total variety of the material. The other bands have all stood the test of time in my eyes - I've loved them all since my mid to late teens and still regularly listen to them all. I'll never tire of DM's Violator, or The Cure's Faith/Pornography/Disintegration.

B. Most influential bands of our generation.

1. Pixies
2. Nirvana
3. Oasis
4. New Order
5. Joy Division

A bit of a cop-out there, seeing as the Pixies influenced Nirvana, and Joy Division / New Order is effectively the same band! I figured I could get away with JD/NO separately because they've both influenced different styles of music. Oasis are listed purely for the amount of inferior rip-off bands they've spawned, including their own later incarnation!

C. Most influential bands of all time.

1. The Beatles
2. Pink Floyd
3. Nirvana
4. David Bowie
5. Led Zeppelin

I was struggling with these choices, so had to think of bands I love who's influences I always hear in other bands. No surprises for these choices I guess.

So Icebus - are you going to compile all the lists and put together a top 10 based on votes? How many replies do you need?

Woody - I'm surprised you were the first to put Deep Purple. I would put them at #6 on my list. Good call!

I'm letting the threads run until the 25th to give as many people a chance to reply as possible, and also hopefully promote a bit of discussion about people's choices. But if you all agree... ;)

The plan is to do a Top Ten for each age demographic in each section, then probably a Top 20 overall, based on number of votes across the three age groups for each category as well.

I was also going to do average age of respondant for each group but seeing as practically nobody in the 14-19yr olds section has done that it might not be feasible.
