Ever been refused security clearance?

I know there are a number of people on here with DV and security clearance. When you apply for it you have to answer quite direct questions like "Have you, your family or anyone you know tried to overthrow the government?"

I know you technically can be refused but I don't know anyone who has, so my question is have you ever been refused clearance? On what grounds did they refuse you? Did you try and overthrow the government? Was it your mum?

My Sister got refused something as her birth place was wrongly inputed as "Barking, United Arab Emirates" which didn't match her passport etc.. Naturally it was "Barking, UK".

The only answer to "Have you, your family or anyone you know tried to overthrow the government?" Should be.... "Not yet."

I mean who is going to answer "yes" to that?!!

You'd be suprised. What pornography people look at offers a window to their fetishes and hence psyche (I'll be damned if I can spell that).

its more just to do with whether you'd be susceptable to blackmail i reckon. The question of "do you look at porn" to a guy is a no-brainer. The real one is whether you subscribe to any as then people will have your details (through payment plan) and could lead to a case of blackmailing..... of course that would be if i cared that people knew a 20-something guy looked at some indecent images

Never argue with an idiot. They'll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

When I started work at a local top secret govt establishment in Aldermaston we had to watch some training videos showing just the same sort of thing.. in one of them, a (married) bloke went to London and slept with a prossie.. turns out she worked for the russkies and they blackmailed him into giving away secrets.

Totally hypothetical film but apparently it does happen

What's DV clearance?

A man who tries is infinitely more likely to succeed than a man who doesn't

Developed vetting or defence vetting I think. It's the next one up from the basic security clearance and lets you see 'top secret' rather than 'uk confidential' iirc

I have SC level and a few people have been rejected for not declaring things like criminal records however small they were.

CCJs and the like also cause problems if not declared, at the end of the day if your honest in the application you should get it.

Is this a private company thing? Or is it in relation to the official secrets act? (which everybody and their cat signs at some point)

SC and DV clearance are proper government checks, done by the DVA (Defence Vetting Agency). The questions about overthrowing government are definately funny :d

Where I work there have been a few people refused SC (you have to be able to obtain SC, not actually have it). Its funny to see people suddenly frog marched out by security!

One was a Muslim who has visited Pakistan about 7-8 times in the past few years (soon to marry a woman from Pakistan) and the other had only recently returned from Australia (had been living there for about 6 years).

Apart from that they seem to give it to every tom, dick and harry!

i was interviewed as an aquaintance of someone going through clearance and when i said he didnt have a girlfriend they asked if he was gay and seemed to push the issue quite a lot, they also questioned his porn habits
possibly went into more detail because when they said "do you think he's watched porn on the internet?" i said "well yes, but probably no more than everyone does"

As a spelling nazi, my favourite bit was where they asked if I had "duel nationality".

My understanding of the DV is that when you go for the interview they are already going to know what most of your answers should be. If you try to hide things, eg the fact that you look at poof porn then that suggests you will be open to blackmail in the future. As long as you tell them everything they already know about you then you will be fine.
