Development history

An early version of the title was first shown at Comic-Con 2005 under the name of Ye Olde Side-Scroller with plans to release on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. At Comic-Con 2006 the official title Castle Crashers was unveiled and the game became was announced as an Xbox Live Arcade exclusive.

In 2007, The Behemoth removed Castle Crashers from the Slamdance Guerrila Games Competition as a protest of Super Columbine Massacre RPG! being dropped from the competition.

The final soundtrack contains user created music submitted to Newgrounds' Audio Portal.

On May 16, 2008, The Behemoth announced that development was finished on the game.

When we played, we hacked our way through lots of knights and archers before finally running into a giant battering ram that had bad guys inside. We leaped into the air and hacked at its planks while avoiding its lethal charges and falling balls of fire. We finally defeated the contraption and moved on, presumably capturing a castle. Later on, we saw four people playing cooperatively, and when they beat that same boss, a princess came out, thanking them for her rescue. The knights did the only thing that knights in that position could do: They fought each other to the death to claim the princess. We've never needed much of a reason to hack up our friends in online battlefields, but we can't wait to see what other lures Castle Crashers will dangle before us when it hits Xbox Live Arcade later this summer.

That alone makes the game instantly appealing, but there's a lot more to this game than just visual flair.

On its surface, Castle Crashers is reminiscent of classic arcade games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or X-Men. There are four heroes on-screen that do battle with a stream of foes in classic beat 'em up fashion. There are two buttons for attack, you can jump and string aerial combos together and double tapping the analog stick in one direction will cause you to sprint. Each color knight has its own special attack that can be done by holding down the right trigger to charge it up. We took charge with an orange guy that could spit out plumes of fire.

Will play the demo and wait for reviews before I jump into to buy it but it sounds promising.

It was rumored that it might be worth 1,600 but it's confirmed that it will be 1,200 points. Apparently it has lots of modes which make it worth the price but I still don't know enough about it yet.

Alien Hominid was good but I hope Castle Crashers is better :)

READ THE REVIEW

Castle Crashers takes the best elements of traditional side-scrolling beat-em-ups and adds lots of flair. There's some great humor here and some nice surprises that will please most. Of course, the most important thing is that it's a whole lot of fun -- especially when you play with friends. While there are some cheap moments with enemies firing at your backside, the bulk of Castle Crashers is an enjoyable ride and one every 360 owner should experience.
