Best card for 1920x1200 gaming?

Hey

Right now I've got an 8800GTS 640meg, but I think it's on its way out! If I play intensive games at 1920x1200 it tends to pack up after about 30 minutes. What's considered the best card for games at high resolutions? I'd love to try and max Far Cry 2 out as much as possible in the next couple of weeks!

Will my processor be a bottleneck? e6600 Dual Core? Don't really want to replace that right now though

Tom

4870, 4870X2 or a GTX280. Pick one.

4870 1gb would be a good choice as it's much cheaper than the other 2 and can keep up quite a bit with the GTX 280 in some games.

Cool, the 4870 is tempting - although I've always stuck with Nvidia cards in the past! Any brand in particular?

Well I'd like the quickest out the box really, as I think I ballsed up the last card with overclocking I might take it easy this time!

Hiya LoadsaMoney, that's very much dependent on the game.

Since the price drop, I think its a great deal this card.

Crysis on 1920*1200 on ultra with 2x ATI 3870 in crossfire. Solid frame rate 95% of the time. No stuttering at-all. Only have to reduce post processing to HIGH from ultra & runs mint again.

Right, I'm all ready to go for the 4870 1gig, but I'm a bit unsure on the whole PCI Express 2.0 thing. I'm pretty sure my rather dated ConRoeXFire-eSATA2 is only PCI Express 1.0. Will it still be compatible?

It is backwards compatable I think so no problems.

Yeah it is, but the 4870 is faster in a lot more at that res than the 280.

Id personally go for the 4870 as Nvidia's GT200 series are not worth buying.

You may hate NV as much as Charlie at the Inq, but the 4870 is nowhere near as fast as you think it is. It's fast, but its not gonna take a GTX280.

Prefers NV because of this, this, and this.

No. With a single card, it'll be 5% at most.

Prefers NV because of this, this, and this.

Many reviews show the 4870 at 1920x1200 with 8xAA faster than the 280, now the 280 costs £305 for the cheapest, the 4870 costs £187, so if your playing at 1920x1200 your going to buy a slower card that also costs £118 more, LMFAO.

Btw i don't hate Nvidia, their cards are just not worth buying, anyone can see that.

Hiya LoadsaMoney, going by this review here, it's actually about even. If you then take into the price of the ATI Radeon 4870 and the Nvidia GTX 280 then it's very hard to actually recommend the Nvidia GTX 280 when you game at a resolution of 1920 x 1200 or higher. I would personally always choose the ATI Radeon 4870.

Hello Boogle, the ATI Radeon 4870 actually does take on the Nvidia 280 GTX in some games. Have a look at this review here.

Heh, I already posted two reviews where the 4870 beat the 280

The points where the 4870 is faster, both cards are easily fast enough. Its the difficult games where the 4870 starts struggling - and in those, the 260 tends to suddenly catch up too, nullifying the price difference.

Prefers NV because of this, this, and this.

I've got a GTX 280 and 4870X2.

The GTX 280 is consistently fast, in some games the 4870X2 blows it out of the water even with 8xAA but yet in others I'm left scratching my head, I can only imagine the normal 4870 is as bad except you've only got half the power.

If your on a budget - 4870
If your not - GTX 280

Btw the processor wont be that much of a bottleneck tbh, do you have it overclocked?
