Ok gonna be buying a new system and I’m leaning towards socket 2011 as I like the idea of quad channel memory.
I make websites, graphics, game, encode and general development.
So I was looking at the 3820 and 16 GB of quad memory or I can save myself a couple of hundred pounds going socket 1155 SB or IB!
So my question is which will last longer and which will be better for developmental purposes?

Many thanks

Hi there,

First, it seems that although LGA2011 does offer more theoretical memory bandwidth with quad channel - you actually get as good or better performance with Ivy bridge LGA1155.

http://www.techspot.com/review/523-ivy-bridge-intel-core-i7-3770k/page3.html

So X79 will give you the ability to run more RAM (at least with a X79 board with 8 RAM slots) the actual memory performance in real-world applications won't be any different from Ivy bridge.

In terms of performance, the i7 3820 and i7 3770K are relatively closely matched at stock speeds (the 3770K can be 5-10% faster depending on the applications). When overclocked to their maximum the 3770K doesn't seem to go quite as far - so their overclocked CPU performance is basically a tie.

With that in mind- the Z77 + i7 3770K is probably best for you in terms of cost/performance. However, the i7 3770K is expected to be pretty much the best CPU that will be coming to the LGA1155 platform. However, with the LGA2011 there are already hex cores like the i7 3930K available and at the end of this year (or possibly early next year) new Ivy bridge-E LGA2011 CPUs are expected. So for future CPU upgrades the LGA2011 socket is a bit better - though bear in mind that these CPUs are relatively expensive (for example the i7 3930K - the lowest-end LGA2011 quad core costs £450).

Hi, Socket 1155/ivybridge is more of a gaming orientated build/a lot faster read/write/copy/latency. Socket 2011 is made for high ram bandwidth/workloads/6core/12 threads.

Looking at the comparison, i would say the 3770k would be better value for the money. But as i don`t know much about encoding, graphics design, etc, best check the comparison. You will probably be able to make a better assumption than me. Sorry i can`t be of more help, but maybe cmdr andi will see this post. He has a fairly good knowledge and have better advice.

Late again.:D
