That machine comes with a dual Msata board in place of one of the HDD with two 64GB SSDs attached.

That does mean you could fit up to 4 SSDs in that machine (2x mSATA, 1x SATA, 1x ODD SATA) and AFAIK they would all be 6Gbps ports.

I don't understand this laptop. I thought the whole point of Trinity APU was that it gave mediocre CPU performance and mediocre GPU performance in a cheap way. What would be the sense in pairing this up with a powerful graphics card? Why would they not put an Ivybridge i5/i7 in this?

Because high-resolution and high detail graphics performance is not CPU reliant, but relies on GPU power.

This machine is quicker than the Intel Ivybridge I7 7970M based laptops as it does not suffer the Enduro utilisation issue. Obviously when AMD fix that issue the Intel models should be a bit quicker, but it won't be huge because at True HD resolution at maximum quality settings in game, its down to your GPU performance, not the CPU.

I think CPU makes more difference than you think...

The numbers are from the desktop Trinity parts, but the principle should still apply, fast GPU paired with fast CPU is a lot faster than a mediocre CPU.

46% increase in Metro, 84% increase in DIRT 3, 50% increase in Crysis aren't slight!

Those benchmarks are at 1024x768 on not very powerful graphics. As such CPU is still very reliant in such test.

CPU makes a difference, but at 1920x1080, with AA/AF, maximum settings, the GPU has the biggest impact of all. :)

Okay. So.. 1920x1080 numbers here.

Minor differences in BF3, Crysis 2, SEv2, Nexuiz, Passion Leads Army...
but big differences in Hard Reset, Arkham City, F1 2012, Lost Planet 2, X3, CS:GO, L4D2, Street Fighter 4, and some of Sleeping Dogs.

It still begs the question, why pair these things up. If the laptop is already going to cost a fortune, why not put an i5 in it and charge £100 more or something.

What model of Intel CPU would this laptops AMD CPU compare too roughly. A friend is thinking of purchasing and he would be playing a lot of Planetside 2 which is very CPU hungry. 7970 will deal with it easily however im not so sure about the CPU

Probably a low end SB based i3*.

Trinity is ok in the desktop space due to its very high clock speed (4.2Ghz turbo) but in the laptop area it is clocked much lower (2.3-3.2). Whilst great by itself (as an APU), it really isn't suited to backing up a HD7970.

Realistically you are looking at the MUCH faster i7 3610QM as a minimum.

*Desktop trinity at 4.2Ghz (with turbo) roughly matches a 3.3Ghz SB i3, thus a 3.2Ghz Laptop trinity should be similar to a 2.4Ghz SB i3.
