I think that I have decided to wait until the next round for this one, which will not be a long wait as the are due in November.

I was going for a 2900 pro but as I look at it the only advantage that it has is the larger memory interface.

The 2950 pro (which I know is based on rumour and heresay) seems to benefit in the following areas:-

Lower power - good for environment et al
Quiter - good for anyone downstairs
DX10.1 - good eventually?
2nd generation DX10 card - better performance?

Also I don't feel as though my X1900XT is completely finished yet!

Anyone got any thoughts? Or do you know something I don't?

Isn't the 2950 based on the RV670 (I think it's called that)? If so that would mean it only has a 256 memory interface so it wouldn't really be as good as though Pro.

As you said though it's based on rumour so the 2950 could be a good card!

I'm half tempted to upgrade simply on a best value basis as the progression from direct x9 to direct x10 is something of a farce concerning high frame rates. It rather rediculously seems you have to upgrade to direct x 10 to get great frame rates for direct x9 these days. Forget direct x10 and wait for 11 lol

Well, if you are upgrading based on DX10, the 2900 series is certianly not the way you want to go atm.

But does the 256/512 memory interface make a difference in real world games at 1280*1024?

I mean neither the tech or the games are quite here yet for direct x10 or 10.1 and until the time arrives when it becomes an equipment prerequisit there appears very little incentive to move to it let alone moving from xp to Vista.

To be fair I hope ATi sort out their Direct X 10 performance soon as they have been mentioned somewhere as saying 7.10 will start to show some gains in the direct x 10 arena and I certainly hope so!
However, in DX9 they are pretty damn solid, the cards are very quick and as iv said, nailed their DX9 gaming now so really they need to crack the whip on the DX10 stuff and hopefully the cards may reach their potential!

I agree, DX9 gaming is the best I've seen it at with ATI. My card runs what I throw at it, I just hope I can say that for DX10.

So do I as that would be a step in the right direction regarding price :)

I hope what Loadsa just told me on MSN aint true, means ATi have lost the plot and that the head of ATi may possibly be smoking pot.

That's a nice little rhyme you have going there...

So am I right in thinking that ATI are pulling the 2900Pro and replacing it with a worse card? Or did my skim reading over this thread fail me massively?

:p

Apparently, 2950Pro, 55nm 2900PRO with a 256bit interface.

Im afraid that knowledge of GPUs isnt my forte-is that 256bit interface worse or better than the current 2900Pro? Likewise with the 55nm...

Well as far as I know ths currenty 2900Pro uses a 512mb ring-bus or something, which would suggest the performance going down to a 256bit interface might cause a performance loss.
