Motorists vs Cyclists

The roads are wide enough in brighton to drive about (with some exceptions such as kemp town), the problem is the rush hours and weekends, i.e. shopping days. From lewes road down to the sea front it's completely packed.

Personally I think that riding in brighton is alright, never been knocked off or felt like I was about to, if someone get's to close then give their window a slap to let them know.

I didn't say motorway. I said city centres and their surrounding areas. And just because you are in a less densely travelled area now, doesn't mean that it will always stay that way. Unless you plan to *wait* for the situation to get that bad before doing something about it.

I am not saying cyclists are perfect. Their behaviour can be poor too, though with less consequences for all involved.

So? Do you think it's fun sitting sandwiched between two buses in a traffic jam gagging on diesel fumes? No, it's not, but pollution's part of modern britain. Wear a smog mask if you don't like it.

And anyway - the OP is whining that cars are too big - my bike's the sort of vehicle he thinks should be used! It's a one/two person vehicle which is pretty much as small as it could be and still comfortably/quickly transport two people and a modest amount of luggage.

So why doesn't he get one? He obviously likes being on two wheels, if he got a motorbike he could shut his whinging and do us all a favour.
 
as a motorcyclist i don't have a big problem with cycles, in fact i quite like the empty cycle lanes on the A12 which i have used once in a while when the gap between the 2 lanes is too small.

how ever while riding through London i have noticed a lot of cyclists don't look, swerve all over the place etc...

With the amount of people on the roads today... be it cyclists, motorcyclists, car drivers or HGV you are going to get countless selfish idiots on the roads. Unfortunately this gives each group a bad name. So as it stands we all complain about everyone on the road.

Cyclists do get more abuse mainly because there are cycle lanes and other investments on the road for them but they haven't paid a penny for it which does annoy everyone that does pay road tax.

I guess you have never seen the price of some bikes then? I could easily spend £3,000 on a bike, simple maths tells me that is 15 years of road tax but if I was of a mind to spend that much on a bike I'd be into the hobby enough that I would probably replace the bike every 3-4 years so no, tax is not always more than a bike.

I said "infrastructure". Use your imagination. It means everything that is required for our entire society and economy to work *except* the transportation of individual people in SUV's. In fact, I could probably even understand Taxi's being part of that, at least the number of taxi's could be limited.

And your attitude seems pretty sarcy too, so I've mirrored it.

EDIT : And just because you pay tax for something, doesn't mean you own it. You pay tax towards the buses, you still can't get on without paying (although thats another thread, I am all for the creation of a free public transport system, but unfortunately it needs to be managed properly).

I ride occasionally to work, in the summer mainly, but what i find unbelievable is ppl who ride on a duel carriageway and at night with no lights. Not being racist but i saw a black man on a bike with no lights on and i could hardly see him, our taxi driver almost hit the imbercil.
 
I would actually prefer to cycle than to drive (not that i can drive as im a student) as it keeps me fit and its a lot cheaper! But the only thing that puts me off is that the law states we have to cycle on roads and not pavements, all because some idiot in the the first place lacked the co-ordination to steer a bike away from pedestrians. I find the roads really quite dangerous on a bike, and you have no protection whatsoever if you fall into the path of a vehicle, and the cycling lanes always seem a mess. One moment the path is there, the next its just disappeared.
 
lol i actually read a news article where it showed that for shortish journeys that cycling created more CO2 than driving :P

My bike cost a lot more than your road tax. Horse riders pay no tax and have right of way - does the fact you pay tax give you the right to cut them up, treat them with no respect the same way most car drivers treat cyclists?

Motorists need to give cyclists more respect, end of.

Individuals being allowed to own and run cars wherever they like is necessary for our society to work.

If you think it would work without them, you're really very naive.
