Dangerous Mosquito in the USA

Very rare disease luckily - but very fatal.

Poor guy managed to spend 6 weeks in the US and get it on his last or second last day there.

Thank God Viruses like that don't get too much of a chance to multiply.

That is seriously unlucky, poor guy!
Exactly what i was thinking, apparently theres only 5 cases a year on average and a tourist gets it...

Even more of an excuse to kill the little blighters on sight even though we dont have mosquitoes that carry the virus in this country it wont stop me from slaughtering every one i see :D

What purpose do mosquitoes have? Would the ecosystem really miss them if they met a flamethrower-related death?

Very bad luck, and to think that it mainly affects horses (Equine) :0

Trivia corner...The first Nobel Prize was won for the work on Mosquitoes and Malaria

And there are specific viruses that are easily transmitted by the Mossies - two of which......

"Malaria parasites survive inside mosquitoes for 9-12 days and actually go through a series of necessary life stages during that period. Encephalitis virus particles survive for 10-25 days inside a mosquito and replicate enormously during the incubation period. "

Luckily HIV isn't one of them as they destroy it and are virtually unable to re-inject it via one of the most complex feeding mechanisms in the world - otherwise we would be in real trouble.

"Studies with HIV clearly show that the virus responsible for the AIDS infection is regarded as food to the mosquito and is digested along with the blood meal. As a result, mosquitoes that ingest HIV-infected blood digest that blood within 1-2 days and completely destroy any virus particles that could potentially produce a new infection. Since the virus does not survive to reproduce and invade the salivary glands, the mechanism that most mosquito-borne parasites use to get from one host to the next is not possible with HIV."

i know! fair enough taking blood but what is the point in them leaving posion behind, just pure mean.

Technically its not really the mosquitoes fault, its the viruses fault for taking advantage of an effective means of transportation but its not like a virus ever had a conscience anyway.

Ouch, poor chap.
I get bitten so often while sleeping here but my gf doesn't get bitten at all, i must be more tasty :p
