Cant help with the creation of such a device but surely fire sprinklers turned on at random would be more effective?

I'm 28 and hate these things because I can still hear them! I've used a personal stereo every day since I was about 14, been clubbing 100's of times over the last 12 years and attended my fair share of ear ringing rock gigs and festivals yet my hearing is still pitch perfect.

Anyway good luck I hope it helps but I can't say I'm keen on these things being more common place, it's not fair on the innocent kids and adults that can still hear them....feels like your brain is being melted.

I'd simply link a large amp and speakers up to a 'warning' button; if oyu have CCTV, I presume it is being monitored?

So the CCTV op sees 'yobs' going in there, slaps the button and kicks a 5-second blast of 17KHz at an obscene volume followed by 'BUGGER OFF!'.

Ah that's what it is!

I've heard these loads of times, literally drilling into my brain and everyone else was like what, can't hear anything?

And there was me thinking that I was special, a slowly aging metalhead, been to many concerts, stood next to many huge speaker racks, listened to music far too loud..

and I can hear that, clear as day, and I'll be 32 next time that cursed day comes around

That sound like the noise TV's and CRT monitors make, only louder and more annoying, I bet a pack of wild dogs will turn up at my door now.

I think you can probably use a microcontroller (such as a PIC or AVR) to generate a tone on a loudspeaker, I know you can generate tones but I don't know how high they can go.

16.7 is the worst on that list btw if you want my advise on what you should use:)

Thanks for the alternative suggestions but I'd already thought of the sprinkler option (too easy for them to break/divert) and loudspeaker with siren or warning but I don't think the neighbours would be too pleased with that one.

I also understand those of you that are over 20 (or under but not troublemakers) that hate these things but I suspect the ones you hear on a daily basis are probably set too loud and emitting their sound in an open area.......mine will hopefully only be loud enough to keep them out of the carport area (thats got 3 walls and a roof) and maybe 6m x 4m and I've read that the sound doesn't travel through walls so its unlikley to reach the perimeter of our grounds and therefore shouldn't annoy anyone who isn't trespassing.

I've seen a ready to built "noise emiter" circuit online from the not to be mentioned electronics place and its dead cheap at £6 but only emits at 20Khz......not sure how I'd go about changing one of the componants or other for something that would make it emit at 17Khz.

There's also another circuit that has adjustable frequencies ~ about £12 but only outputs 1w of power so not sure if I could power a speaker of sufficient power for it to work?
Add a variable resistor?

I'm sadly disappointed with this thread. I clicked it thinking someone was building a replica de Havilland Mosquito. :(
