2900XT FAN Problem

When i use version 7.6 of the Catalyst drivers the ASIC temp is around 57c and the LM64 temp is around 52c.

However when i update to any other new version of the Catalyst driver (7.7, 7.8, 7.9, 7.10) i have trouble with the ASIC temp. The LM64 temp idles fine however the ASIC temp will continue to gradually rise until it gets above 70c and the fan kicks in and brings the temp down to 60c. The process then begins again with the temp gradually rising until the fan kicks in.

This happens in just general usage and without accessing anything 3D. I have formatted my PC yet the problem remains.

Is this a genuine problem with the GFX card or is it how the new drivers perform? Anyone any ideas?

Mine does the same, temperature goes upto 70c fan kicks in, temps fall fan stops and the whole process starts over again.
This seems to be happening more when I changed to Cats 7.10, when I was using 7.9 the fan would only kick in if my room was fairly warm.

Thinking about putting my water cooling on or selling! tend to use xbox more.

i wouldn't mind so much if it was in games but when i am just in windows watching a film it gets a tad annoying.

Same here, just surfing the forums.
When I had my 2 x 1900XT in crossfire they were silent even when gaming!

whats your 2d clock set at?

while i watch tv the fan doesn't spin up. it stays at 31% and temp 47c. when im gaming the temp goes to 68c which the fan stays at 31% till it gets past 70c..

maybe u haven't got enough air flow in your case..

2D clocks are 506/513.

Not a problem with airflow as my first post states that everything is fine under 7.6.
btw do u have ati tools installed and running? if yes try exiting it because ive noticed that it spinsup the fan and temps..

if no,try underclocking the 2d clock to 310

absolutely brilliant! you are a legend gareth!

I never thought about actually underclocking the 2D clocks.

I set them to 297/310 and now the ASIC idles at 65c. As long as it's below 70c and the fan isn't driving me bonkers i am happy.
