American Gangster

Great movie, stunning performances from Denzel and the crowe, tho it did drag in a few places but i wont mark it down for that

i loved it, and people who are expecting a load of violence and action just because it had the word gangster in the title will disappoint themselves. the film tells a story not about violence but about a black mans rise to the top as a self made drug king.

i feel it could have been longer also.

I thought it was alright but not that good. Nevertheless it's the best film I've seen for a while. 7/10.

I got the impression a lot of people in the auditorium thought a movie with a black lead and the word 'gangster' in the title meant money, bitches and grillz (at least thats what their dress code, lazy enunciation and loud predictions about the film suggested :p).

This film was excellent. Gripping story with excellent actors, a fantastic director and surprisingly good extras. I highly recommend it.

Of course, I highly recommend Requiem for a Dream, but that's a different basket of bramleys.

Top film. Had high expectations with the two leading actors and director, and it delivered and then some. I'm a big fan of the genre though, and consequently I disagree with those that said it was too long. You need a good length of time to let a proper story unfold.

A good film, if you want violence go watch beowulf or hitman, this film tells an intersesting story and it does it well. It keeps you engaged through the whole film and the little side plots (although relevent) act as nice little breaks in the story. There was so much that wasnt told in the film, like frank lucas has 7 children and what happened to the soldiers who were 'in on it'. It shows lucas for what he was, sure he might seem nice but he is a terrbile, cold blooded man inside that puts on a good show.

An interesting film and it should be commended for that, forget the technical nitty gritty stuff, the overall experience was superb.

I still preferred the untouchables though...

Ditto.

I think Russell Crowe is very underrated - he was amazing in LA Confidential and A Beautiful Mind - 2 of my favourite films

Ditto.

The acting was faultless. Everything was believable. I enjoyed how the movie portrayed Lucas at times as human, reasonable and almost a virtuitous person. Then it would bring that illusion crashing down when Lucas lashed out violently or hurt those close to him. The party shooting and piano scene stands out in my mind.

I, some what randomly, thought it kind of a like an alternate reality version of Scarface but where Pacino's Tony Montana has more of a strategy, more restrained tactics and isin't abusing his own product. Thats my own crude comparison. This film stands firmly on its own two feet. It doesn't need to borrow from anything and indeed, doesn't.

9/10. No criticisms at all. I think the time spent setting the scene, developing the characters and the speed of developments was just right. Never before have I been tempted to go back to the cinema and watch a film twice. A classic addition to the crime / gangster genre in my opinion.

Saw the film last night. Definitely one of the best films released this year. Very strong plotline, great acting from both Washington and Crowe (although Crowe could've been casted by someone else he lived up to the role fairly well). The only action scene in there was pretty fulfilling. I want to watch it again and is a definite purchase for me when it's released on DVD.

Props to Robert Diggs (RZA), Clifford Harris (T.I.) Lonnie Lynn (Common) - rappers turned actors, for respectable acts.
